What are my chances for flight compensation?

Hi All

I am new to this site and this is my first post.

On sat 14th September we were meant to fly from Birmingham to Fuerterventura with Monarch at 3.45pm however we were delayed until 9pm and when were approaching fueterventura airport the pilot came on and announced that the futerventura airport was shut and they had tried to keep it open the flight was then re-directed to Gran Canaria where accommodation was arranged for the night. When we landed we had to depart the plane and collect our luggage none of the Monarch representatives told us what was happening and there was no Monarch rep just some Spanish guy that worked at the airport informed us all what was happening. We got our flight to Fueterventura at 1pm the following day at checking in for the flight we were given a letter from Monarch where they had lied on part of the letter.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you think I have a good case to claim? My two old was also bad during the flight and when we got to fueterventura we ended up taking him to the hospital to see the doctor if we'd been there sooner we could have taken him on the sat instead of sun afternoon.

I rang the insurance and they said we weren't entitled to anything as the delay at birmingham was less than 12 hours I think that this might of happened before and that Monarch knew this and it also seems odd that they managed to arrange accommodation for hundreds of people.
