Day out in Nottingham

Hello all :)

I am planning a day out with the family (2 adults and 2 kids) to Nottingham city centre one of the days during the October half term. We are travelling by train.

My question is for local Nottingham folk is; are there any children's museums or relatively cheap places to visit?

We are going to visit the Caves in the shopping centre but I've read that it doesn't last long and don't want 2 bored children looking round at shops all day until our train home.

Thanks in Advance.

The Contemporary should have some activities on, and I love Brewhouse Yard Museum. Also, just outside the city are Green's Windmill and Wollaton Park (with an industrial museum), both well worth a visit.
  • The Galleries of Justice do a joint ticket with the caves and its well worth the money, Best to book the Justice first as it gets busy.

galleries of justice and Brewhouse Yard definitely get a thumbs-up from me, both are city-centre locations so easy to find.

The caves tour starts inside the Broadmarsh shopping centre - but these days thats a very loose description as that shopping centre was scheduled to be pulled down years ago but the finance deal went through. Have a wander along Clumber Street (loads of Designer shops) to the Victoria Centre (our "proper" shopping centre), then if you have time there are often themed market stalls in the Market Square too.

Brewhouse yard is now only open at the weekend - but its a great place to visit.

Galleries of justice is great too and quite near the caves.

How old are the kids ?

i have just spent the weekend in nottingham with my kids - we stayed over night in a cheap hotel...

we did not go shopping once,

we did the galleries of justice and the caves in one afternoon

and the next day did the Castle, and the caves at the castle including the pub at the bottom that is built in the caves....the kids spent ages in there playing the horn on the bull game

the kids really enjoyed it and we would have done the brewhouse museum but it was not open.

We also did the adventure golf at the Corner House in the evening which they enjoyed but i think was overpriced for what it was...but was at least something to do with kids on an evening before going out for a meal

  • Hello ..I'm not from Nottingham,in fact I live in London but my daughter is at Nottingham Trent Uni so I feel slightly qualified to reply to your post. Nottingham is a lovely city and if your going to visit with kids the castle is lovely, fingers crossed the weather stays with you as the gardens are great to eat a picnic in. There are loads of children friendly places to visit. If you use facebook sign up to love notts page it's always got loads of good stuff + if your not a facebook user has a good website anyway. Check out Homemade just off the town square for good eats for families + always have half term food offers.Enjoy it's alovely town and that's from a Londoner ;)

    They are 6 and 8.

We plan to do the caves as soon as we arrive, booking permitting. I guess it depends on how busy they are and when the next available tour is. I'm not sure what else we could 'fit in' time wise. It's difficult as we are travelling by train so will stick to City Centre locations.

Is the Windmill museum within walking distance? When we visit Leeds we walk from the train station to the Royal Armouries and that takes about 15-20 minutes. Is it similar?

Thank you to everyone that has replied :) so many things to see and do. I'll take all your comments into consideration x

Is the Brewhouse Museum Free? I've been on the official website but it doesn't mention an entrance fee. We are possibly thinking of visiting on Saturday?
