Hardboard is fine.

We would normally use 9mm ply.0

Yep if fixing to timber floors, the hardboard is fine. Use ring nails for fixingA thankyou is payment enough .0

Was advised once to use oil tempered hardboard as a underlay for vinylANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0

yes old house with trad wooden floor, I was thinking of using screws to fix down the hardboard
Screws might be a mistake. Not much scope for countersinking the heads in hardboard.
I would use ply. Hardboard will more easily transmit any cupping or defects through to your vinyl surface.Forgotten but not gone.0 -
Yes screws won't work. Copper hardboard nails or if you use ring shank nails as Plumb suggests make sure you use short ones - ie no longer than the depth of the floorboards themselves. Nothing worse than the power going off accompanied by a little snap, crackle and pop or that annoying "hiss" sound followed by a little dampness.

most likely go for hardboard but maybe check out chipboard and mdf as other cheaper alternatives to more expensive plywood0

I would say plywood would be overkill for this use. Hardwood is fine.0
