Got notification that 18 of these were ready to be installed so started to do so, half hour later and the first one as not installed can it be that some updates take this amount of time to install. TIA

I've had update notifications this morning as well ... Microsoft usually release them on the 2nd Tuesday of the month which means in reality Wednesday for us in the UK.
I had varying numbers reported for each of my 5 PCs because they are all subtly different, but all 5 took quite a long time to download and install. Two of my machines had downloads of over 100Mb!
It seems to be the updates to the various versions of .net that are the slowest.
Just be patient and walk away while it does it's thing.

individually ".NET" updates take an age to run for some reason! and their are a LOT of .NET updates today!
also ".NET" updates tend to only want to install one at a time between reboots! so you might get a lot of "failed" messages and asking for reboots.
Hope you have nothing planned for the rest of the day... ^_~ lol
just about to start the 24 windows 7 updates i've got today....Laters

The install of an update hangs?
Go into task manager and stop spoolsv.exe
Worked for me, install then continues.0 -
can't find spoolex.in task maager0

Task manager - Processes - spoolsv.exe
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-onenote/kb2760600-not-installing/811842f5-6a58-40e1-a107-7303ddc4dcdf
All I had to do to fix this was run Task Manager, click the "Show processes from all users" icon, and end the "spoolsv.exe" process. Have Windows Update running so you can install the update as soon as you close the "spoolsv.exe", because this service will automatically restart itself in a short time.0 -
Sooler did what you suggested but the update for net framework 4 still stuck on 2% after 2 hours.0
