With friends - tell them you are going for a pee/to the gents/to shake hands with an old friend - whatever sort of thing they say.

Formal situations/non-friends. Don't announce what you are doing. Just say 'excuse me for a minute' and go.

Jacket - jackets are not 'coats'. Leave on. Again though depends on who you are with but assuming it's formal/business if you are all suited and booted, leave on. If you just happen to be meeting a friend after work and still have your suit on, you can take jacket off if you are hot.

You leave your jacket on. It would be normal etiquette to say "Please excuse me whilst a take a p*ss/sh*t/bash one out/hit on George Michael/have a cheeky line"

    :rotfl:

Or I'd just say 'excuse me'

  • Oh, and whatever you do, don't suggest that people have a "comfort break".

Glad it's not just me that finds "comfort break" irrationally irritating.

If it's hot take your jacket off, if not leave it on :D
If you're a woman you go to the loo when everyone else goes. Must admit I've never quite understood this herd mentality when it comes to lavatory use, but it seems to be relatively unusual for a woman to go the the ladies on her own when she's with a group of people.

These days its almost Pavlovian for me, I only have to think about or see a loo and I want to widdle:o

We've had a bathroom being fitted all summer and the unplumbed in loo sits there taunting me with its unavailability as I walk past it and then have to hurry to the old bathroom.

I was always taught that it's polite to simply rise and excuse yourself when going to the loo. Of course, when I do this with my OH he always asks me where I'm going - where does he think I'm going?!

I've never been keen on going to the ladies with a group, I get shy bladder so the thought of having to go whilst people can hear me or talking to me is really off-putting! :o

I was also taught that it is vulgar to apply make-up at the table too, so if you want to fix your lippy then go to the ladies to do so!

As for the jacket question, if you're in the kind of establishment where you feel like you have to ask, leave it on! I'd always follow the crowd with that one! :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that a suit jacket would be a bit uncomfortable for eating in. So I would take it off, unless it was cold in the restaurant. Assuming I had a business dress top on like a nice shirt or something.

OMG PMSL! :rotfl: Re the OP. I would say leave it on, just stand up and say 'excuse me, shan't be long...' I think it'd be OBVIOUS what you're doing/where you're going. Even the QUEEN needs to 'go' you know

Why??? If you're only interested in having a gossip with your mates then why do it in a toilet surrounded by other people having a p*ss or a d*mp? And you actually do need to use the facilities for their intended purpose then why would you want to do it in company?
