I'd imagine it depends on the style, age and character of the house and its locality. What colour was it painted before and what colour are the nearby houses?

If they are 1900-ish terrace then cream is a classic as it looks really good against the red brick and won't clash with window frames (are they white?) Black or dark blue front doors are supposedly the most 'homely' according to some rubbish research.

This was our old house just after we had painted it so it will give you an idea of colours. The best thing to do as RichyRich said is to look at what everyone else has done and see what looks good

the cream colour actually looks quite nice. currently it is light blue but it hasnt been painted for around 13 years lol. most of the surrounding area have a mixture of colours. the cream does look good on red brick but we have brown brick like the one to the right but i think your right as its better sticking to lighter colours than having a colour that is darker than the brick colour. thanks for the help.

Pastel colours are nice like blue, green, yellows.

We painted our last house first in light blue, then yellow (not bright or dark colours) That was the upper bay windows, and sills not brickwork.

Creams are always a favourite too, our new house has now got a buttermilk colour which is far better than a pale mustard colour it hard, stands out and really complements the house.
