This is what happens when corporations treat everyone like big babies. People start relinquishing responsibility for the most basic of tasks, quite literally handing their cognitive function over to industry. To justify their inability to think properly they start banging on, like you say, about people losing jobs or going to prison. No one will ever go to prison for selling a 70 year old a bottle of booze. But that threat persists, lingering in people's minds all the while giving credence to ridiculous policies like 'Think 25' and the like.
At my local Tesco there used to be a continual disembodied voice booming at everyone who stepped on the travelator. Apparently most people forget to start walking again once they get to the end leading to an enormous pile up of sprawled bodies with more and more being spewed from this endlessly churning staircase. Thankfully they've switched off this annoying message. Perhaps they've realised that the really, really stupid people are getting the lift and those brave enough to risk the travelator have enough power left in their McBrains to switch to walking mode once they've reached the end."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I suspect it's been removed by the OP who probably got fed up with people trying to tell him that it was reasonable for people to ask a pensioner to prove they were over 18 lest they lose their job or end up in prison for serving alcohol to a minor.
Personally, I think anyone who can come out with anything so utterly inane has completely lost the plot.
I don't think its the fault of the cashier (which the OP was moaning about) but rather the system/company/law or whatever. At my local Tesco there used to be a continual disembodied voice booming at everyone who stepped on the travelator. The original post stated that the cashier was in training and was his first day. I wouldn't be surprised if his manager told him to ID everyone no matter what, this is done to get them into the habit of asking for ID. Sure if it was a pensioner then obviously no ID is required, however if its your first day at work and you've been asked to do something, I don't know about you but I would do it.

I agree.
But my point was that a lot of people were saying it was perfectly reasonable as a matter of courseto ask people over 65 to prove they were over 18. That's what I found ridiculous.
Yes, the cashier might be intent on doing exactly as he was told and yes, the manager may have mistakenly omitted to tell him that when it was beyond all doubt the customer was old enough he did not have to ask for ID. Both of those scenarios are perfectly understandable and excusable.
But to suggest that the practice is routinely reasonable is plain daft. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I once IDed a woman who got incredibly offended that I'd asked for her ID (She was 36) and complained to the manager. I would've thought she'd think it was a compliment.
However, I've also been in a situation where I've been IDed on a m&s self-service till and the assistant hasn't believed me and asked for another type of ID as he seemed to think my driving licence was fake.
There should just be blanket IDing regardless, rather than think 25 or whatever, just do everyone, then no one can get offended or feel put out because everyone has to go through the same rigmarole.
Saying that though, IDing someone on a zimmer frame, with grey hair and more wrinkles than a bedsheet after a hot wash and dry cycle, is pretty ridiculous.0 -

I don't really agree with that because, whilst it's not an enormous hassle to provide ID - especially if you know its' going to happen, it still takes time (and imagine the delays on the self scan tills at the supermarkets), and it would be yet another instance of the innocent being punished for the actions of the guilty.
The law is that you cannot buy alcohol under the age of 18.
And yet which group are never prosecuted for doing so?
Yup, the ones breaking the law or trying to do so.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Very true. The tweens around our area seem to have no problems getting white lightning (then again the parents probably buy it for them), and yet I've been in supermarkets where they have refused to sell a woman a bottle of wine because she has had her five year old daughter with her and there's a chance the woman is buying it for the daughter (!!!!)0 -
