It happens - when I was in the US a few years ago I witnessed a guy who looked like Santa Claus being ID'd for a beer, guy had served in Vietnam and was clearly the more senior side of 60!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

Because he was new and still training he was probably told to ID everyone to practice that procedure. Then didn't know what to do with an ID without a photo.
But the supervisor was obviously more experienced, and didn't have to ID you because she wasn't being trained at the time, and could see you were obviously over 18.
Not that hard to figure out...0 -
vote with your feet and dont shop there again until they have a policy of employing people with a brain!
this country drives me insane sometimes, this is a perfect example of the stupid rules being introduced everyday. this wouldnt have happened thirty years ago.0 -
From someone who has worked in a shop I can tell you that they drill the whole ID thing till you are blue in the face!
They say, you can lose your job, you can get fined you can even go to jail! They really put the fear in to make sure they ID everyone.
Someone has already mentioned that the cashier was obviously in training so therefore was asking for ID for everyone, possibly for practice, possibly he was told to do it.
Its nothing personal, its just how they trained and yes the rules are pretty extreme but its not the cashiers fault, its just how things have gotten out of hand!
Have to say, you whipping out your old drivers license as a form of ID was a pretty immature thing to do, should have acted your age, maybe had a joke with him (but not at his expense) and just provide the ID.0 -
It might seem over cautious that you were asked for ID when buying alcohol but the cashier is only protecting themselves. The person selling you alcohol is the one who receives the fine, could lose their job, etc if they sell to an underager. Many places it is 'challenge25' so if you look under 25 they won't serve you unless you have photo ID. Whenever I have visited the states they have particularly strict laws when selling alcohol, no ID no sale. I don't see any problem in having to produce photo ID to prove I can legally buy alcohol. Would you rather somebody lost their job?0

And what if you don't have photo id? I haven't got passport, my driving licence is old style without photo.0

For goodness sake, OP is a pensioner, there was no doubt that he was over 25, none at all. Noone is ever going to lose their job serving alcohol to a 65 year old, and I've yet to see a 65 yo who looks under 25.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Where's the opening post gone?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I suspect it's been removed by the OP who probably got fed up with people trying to tell him that it was reasonable for people to ask a pensioner to prove they were over 18 lest they lose their job or end up in prison for serving alcohol to a minor.
Personally, I think anyone who can come out with anything so utterly inane has completely lost the plot. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
