Those old Focus's are still very nice to drive. I think they feel more refined than the Astra.

Son has a Y reg. One wheel bearing, a battery and routine service items in the last 5 years. Not bad for a car that's worth under a grand and is generally neglected.
    Je suis sabot...
  • If I was given the choice between the two, I'd go for the Focus, from what I've been told by owners, the MK1 Focus 's were better than later models, plus the Astra 'G' models are just plain ugly.

I have a soft spot for the Astra having used them as an RRV with the Ambulance service for years.

1.8 auto is fast, economical and robust. They are also cheap!

But the Focus is also a good vehicle. Owned a mega mile mk1 estate.

I personally think the Astra seats are better than anything fitted to the Focus.

I would buy on price and condition.

But the 1.8 petrol Astra is silly quick for a family runaround. From memory it was 8.5secs to 60! Quicker than most "hot hatches".

So in the end, it comes down to the size of penis, or more to the point, whether you want to compensate for having a very small one.

Well, if you are buying an old Focus or Astra I doubt a 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds is high up the list of priorities unless of course you are a boy racer and want to try an impress your mates.

I ran a 1600 'W' reg Astra G from 2001 until 2010 with no problems except a water pump failure in all that time. Then I gave it to my two kids who ran it until April this year. They needed to replace the battery, both rear springs and the catalytic converter in that time. It went from 15k mileage to 200k in that time, and needed two exhausts and four sets of tyres, one clutch change plus two cambelt changes. And about 20k of those miles were towing a caravan.

I would go so far as to say it was the most reliable car I have ever owned.

No actually you are the one purely focused on the vehicles performance.

I made a throw away comment to show that the Astra with the 1.8 actually has decent performance. Not to buy a 1.8 Astra purely for that purpose.

    You inferred that.

For example the human brsin is capable of many amazing things, mathematical calculations, inventing things, creating music and impressive acts of engineering when used properly by people who work to learn and create and stretch their mind to be all they can be and to perform at the highest level.

Then there are those that do nothing with their god given brain power and chose to make smsrt comments on internet forums when they have nothing to add to a debate or thread.

    Guess which you would be?:rotfl:
