Astra G vs Focus Mk1

Looking for a car around this budget and therefore age (2001 ish).

I'm no mechanic, but can do the basics. As my budget stretches to a cheaper car, I wouldn't mind learning the ropes on other bits. Either one of these particularly easier to work on than the other?

Not sure. My mate has a Mk1 Focus on a Y platre. It's now done 151,000 miles and runs fine but has electrical issues (central locking doesn't work) and rust in almost every panel but it does live outside and is a bit of a workhorse.

He's stayed on top of servicing though and it looks like the body will fall apart around the engine!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

1.6 16v Astra G estate here - 173,000 miles and still runs like a dream. The only problem I've got with it is that the AC has died - not something I'm bothered about.

I only bought it as a quick fix when I had to give up my company car on promotion - that was 6 years ago!

The Astra G was the last decent Astra.

Had a 1.6 8v which was a simple engine, reliable, easy and cheap to fix and harked back to the ultra reliable earlier models.

I have also noted recently that a lot of the early Focus' are suffering rust at the bottom of the doors, back and front. Have not seen a rusty Astra G.

Everybody raves about the Focus but the Astra G was an unsung hero.

The H is a great car unless you buy the diesel.
  • I drive a W reg focus, which is on 162k miles. Still going strong and surprisingly only has 1 tiny bit of rust on the passenger door!
  • I drive a S plate Focus, which is on 85k and running like a beauty, hopefully it sails through the MOT next month woohooo.

would like to upgrade it to the new focus next summer :think::think:
