First of all, you don't need the program, only the basic Driver.
If you really want the program you can simply disable Avast, run the program and then re-enable Avast.
  • I don't understand the first bit of what you say. as far as i know this computer cannot use wifi without this dongle or similar so I need to add the software for the dongle?

What is the full model number of the adapter?

You can also run a System Restore to a point before the problem began.
  • The adaptor is EW-7612UAnV2.

If a system restore will affect other things and is maybe complex (for an IT fool like me) I'd rather find a simpoler solution but if not I'll try and follow those instructions, thanks.

System Restore will affect nothing else.
  • Gonna try and disable avast, add the dongle, restart, restore avast, cross my toes, etc.
  • Seems to have worked. Thanks for the time and effort all who tried to help. Much appreciated. Sorry if anything I said sounded stupid but I think techie people and non techie people speak a different language as things that can seem very obvious to you guys aren't to total amateurs!

    Thanks again.
