    my advice.

IF you've had the HG failure confirmed with a sniff test and or compression test by a garage!.

is not use the ZR at all whilst it has the issue.

these engine are not like any other engine. they are all aluminum block engines, the cant withstand overheating like some other cars can, you can cause the aluminum to degrade in hardness, and also distort the plastic inlet manifold sometimes to the point of melting the mating face of the manifold causing warping which in-turn will cause air leaks and lack of power and finding one that hasn't already come off an already cooked engine the isn't already melted or warped is hard to come by.

It's not actually going, so we definitely won't be using it!

OH explained all to the guy over the phone, and he said it'll be at least £350, possibly more depending on cost of fuel and if any extras need doing. Waiting list at the mo is at least two weeks.

The bloke from the garage who quoted £600-700 said that was mostly labour, so I assume these guys are still making enough if their fuel costs are added on top too?

    i own a rover 75 on a 54 plate early 2005 registration.
the HG didnt show signs of being blown appart from slight dribble of engine oil comeing form the mating face, sniff test showed it to be fine, compression test showed it to on the mark and no issue.

i bought a full hg kit. like this one from my local factors for about the same price.

a litre of OAT antifreeze (this is a must on rovers as generic non OAT RATED antifreeze will not prevent oxidization in an all alu block) £1.50 in my local motor factors.

oil filter £4.00 and oil mobile 1 super 2000 10w 40 5 litres (can be bought on offer at halfords for around £18.00 )although any sae semi synthetic 10w 40 can be used although now its getting cold 5w 40 can be used.

gates timing belt kit £39.00 and firstline water pump £22.00

i bought additional things such as uprated high tensile steel headbolts, strenghened oil ladder, uprated inlet manifold gasket (although the HG kit had a normal inc in the kit theres an uprated one available for £7.50 anyway) and bought a new rad hose and piston ring set (as the liners were being removed and resurfaced made sense to renew piston rings aswell.
  • I'm taking about dealers in general, £100 is about the average hourly rate.

This forum baffles me, something a bit pricey and everyone jumps on the ripoff band wagon, too cheap and there's gotta be something wrong.

I've gone to the bother of explaining why that price of £350 didn't appear right (if you do the job properly) The OP has since confirmed that the £350 is a starting price and fuel allowance plus any extra parts needed will be on top.

    Fair enough
