Garage is quoting way over the odds. The guys on the MGR forum charge around £350 all in.

Thanks for all the advice, you lot are so helpful.

I found some good reviews on the MG Rover forum and the OH's been on the phone to a mobile mechanic today. Quote is around £350 including timing belt and fuel to come up from Derby, so much cheaper than the garage!

Fingers crossed once it's fixed, it stays fixed!

BeenThroughItAll - thanks for the thought :) hope your move goes well!

would add an extra £100 to it for skim and test.

My mate had his ZR done recently, a guy he found via the MG forums, around the £300-£350 price, he even came with a skimmed head to swap over. Did it on his drive on a Saturday morning.

I'll check with OH if this was mentioned :)

I'm pretty sure we're all talking about the same mechanic off the forums, as I recall (from when I owned a rover) its £350ish all in, unless your own head can't be skimmed for the next person and needs replacing, in which case it would be a bit extra. Although this situation is rare.

If he is good, reliable and to be trusted, why not name him? Sounds like a decent guy helping repair Rovers woeful shortcomings on potentially great engines.

    That's the fella :)

Just worked out my budget and it won't be getting fixed for at least 5 weeks, but at least we know what it'll cost so we've got a plan!
