Free postage DSRs

I've done it before, I've messaged the buyer, refunded the difference and they've been fine with it.
Most buyers will be fine if you're up front about it as a mistake - if I'd paid for first class, it arrived second class, and I'd had no refund or contact from the seller, I'd be marking down DSR.0 -
I do look at postage costs, services when I buy an item and if the item arrives with a lesser postage service than I had paid for I'd be a bit peeved.
If you know you have made a genuine mistake than you can contact the buyer and refund the difference in postage.
If they can't mark you down on postage you might find your description / dispatch stars falling as the delivery method was not as described or the item took longer to arrive.0 -
You could just message them and say sorry that it went second instead of first - I don't think most people would mind, but you could get someone being a crabby knickers and marking you 1 star on dispatch time, and as a TRS it's just not worth it.
I do free second class, first class for 99p, next day for a fiver. Rarely someone upgrades to first, and it gives me the discount on fees.0 -

The buyer hasnt paid for 1st class. Postage is 'free'.
The whole point of stars is so buyers can mark down in categories the seller has failed in. If buyers mark down in any category for any perceived failure in any other category, whats the point of star categories? Might as well go back to the old positive neutral negative like it was in the first place.0 -
I would mark down the dispatch star. And comment on it too. Because I would see it as dishonest and calculating.I've done it before, I've messaged the buyer, refunded the difference and they've been fine with it.

The difference is 10p0 -
Fair enough, sending second rather than first will affect the delivery speed, so someone who has bought based on that who receives slower could still mark you down.
As I said, how you choose to operate is entirely down to you, but being upfront with buyers about errors is more likely to avoid low dsrs than just taking a chance.0 -

All buyer will see though is that he has paid for 1st and got 2nd class. The amount is immaterial, all that matters is that buyer has not got what they paid for and may have the perception of a slower despatch time.
Wouldn't it be easier to just list everything at 2nd class if your business is large enough that you are worried about making mistakes?

Yes thank you, everything new is now listed as you say 2nd class free, 1st class optional extra. New listings are all listed as such and have been since they started charging.
Some of my old multiple relists however, still had the old 1st class at cost with free combined postage (or additional multiple items etc. on 30-day listing), although I changed the postage to free when the new free postage requirement came in, but on some items I didnt change the option from 1st class combined to 2nd class with charged option for 1st and express.
As its only 10p difference on most items.
It's quite time-consuming to go through changing everything as I probably don't need to tell you.
That's why the problem arose, why I had 1st class free offered.
Then I erroneously stamped an item 2nd class, noticing my error later.
I don't think it's ok for stars to be trashed in all categories regardless of performance in those categories for an error (for whatever reason) in one category.0 -

I agree. Doesn't stop it happening though, that's why communication is necessary to mitigate the chances of it happening.0 -
