Blu ray player with dongle wifi

Bought a blu ray player in Argos about a year ago, was told that it needed this dongle to turn my tv into a smart tv, but my Samsung tv has no USB ports. It was bought in late 2007, but I can't believe that it does not have a USB port.

Any advice?

Roku or similar if the TV has an HDMI port.

BluRay player should plug straight into the TV anyway.

Should we guess as to which machines are involved?? What are you thinking?

Samsung blu ray is plugged into the tv by HDMI cable and works fine.
the tv has no usb ports, to make it wireless by inserting the dongle.

TV doesn't need to be Wireless capable. Plug the Roku in via HDMI. The Roku is WiFi capable.
Cheapest way to a Roku(albeit a limited version) is via the NOW TV box. Just £9.99.

Perhaps they meant the BluRay player needed a Dongle.

    Model number? Wakey wakey! :)

Yes, we've just bought a Samsung BluRay player which is 'wifi ready' so it needs a dongle for wifi - its the BluRay player that is smart, not the tv.

Yes, it is the blu ray, but when you plug the dongle in, it doesn't do anything?

So did you buy the Samsung Dongle? I hope not, as it won't work.

Just another stupid marketing term, such as HD Ready.

If you really need it to be WiFi, you need one of these. Otherwise just get a long Ethernet cable and put it between the Router and BluRay player. Doesn't have to be that long. Just wanted to show how cheap they can be. Then you can at least test it's capability before spending more. Hope you can send the Dongle back if you actually bought it.

What is it that you are trying to do? Stream content from your other devices to your TV? If it is just for YouTube, don't waste your cash.

Get a Now TV box instead for £9.99 and 'sideload' Plex if you want YouTube. If you want to Stream, you can install the Plex App to your devices.

Cheaper and more flexible with more channels.

You won't get any joy from Argos, as they didn't sell it as WiFi capable.

    Their blurb:
The Samsung BD-E5300 Blu-ray Player lets you connect to a world of online content and Smart services incredibly easily. You can also plug in your USB stick or external HDD drive and access movies, photos, music and more

Can you tell us exactly what the make & model number is of the dongle you bought, and what happens when you plug it into the BluRay player - any messages on screen etc?
