I used Car File too under the Government Scrappage Scheme just over 4 years ago to get my Yaris.

Phoned carfile, gave them the spec of my car, they phoned me back and if I agreed on the price, they passed my details onto the supplier, and I placed the order with a deposit (sorry can't remember how much possibly £1000 but not sure), then paid the balance 3 days approximately before I picked it up.

I dealt with the main dealer wholly after agreeing my price with car file. I take it they get commission when my car is paid for / picked up.

I drove 500 miles to pick up my car, as even doing this it was cheaper than my local Toyota Dealer 2 miles from my front door.

When I had a problem with the windscreen leaking it went to the dealer 2 miles away to be repaired under warranty, with no questions or quibble.

Would I buy online again, definitely, even driving 1000 miles in less than 24 hours, hotel, meal and petrol costs I still saved £600+ compared to the dealer just along the road.

Would I do anything different, yes book 2 days off work or longer to do the travel and not drive 1000 miles in less than 24 hours!

Oh and it looked weird me driving on new English Registration Plates up in Dundee, Scotland.

I used Carfile too for our Mazda 5. We live in Kent and had to collect from the dealer in Stoke. My local dealer offered £1,500 off list and the Carfile price was £4,000 less.

The only pick up time they could give me was 7.30am on 1st September or 8 days later. This was understandable given the plate change and huge volumes.

I booked a Premier Inn for £64, picked up a lovely Chevy Aveo from Enterprise for a one rental of £70. Add in fuel of £30 for the hire car.

When I got to Stoke I went straight to the dealership and inspected my car externally (dealership was closed).

The next day I went for the handover, they tried to get their business manager to upsell more guff but he wasn't bothered (probably had loads of suckers lined up later who had already bought paint protection, overpriced GAP, tyre insurance, etc etc).

Handover took 10 minutes so I asked if I could leave the car where it was whilst I retutned the hire car 10 minutes walk away.

Factor in another £30 for fuel for the slow drive back and I really enjoyed it. I like to think there is more to life than getting somewhere. Driving up/down I could listen to the music I wanted at the volume I wanted.

The only hiccup of the whole thing was going to KFC in Stoke (cue pricked ears from the MSE Food Polis) at 8pm for something to eat and being told that they had sold out of food but had to stay open!

I'd agree with the posters suggesting that you use the online discounters to negotiate a deal with your local dealer - worked for me. Produced a 15% discount on a vehicle with a waiting list, and I'd sooner deal with a local dealer than one at the other end of the country.

Take car with some of the online discounters, too. The best prices usually involve buying a car which isn't actually registered to you until 6 months after purchase, and that creates a few problems.
