Oh come on now... you can try to justify the comment forever... To me and many others I suspect it reads like a nasty inappropriate comment that wasn't necessary at all.
If a person comes to these boards, then they are in need of support, and they probably already feels like crap.

I'll leave the thread now... thanks so much to those that have given advice, it was very much appreciated.0 -
Don't you have credit cards from when your husband was still living with you you could put on and then pay the monthly payments?
The reason why people get a bit defensive is that many people on benefit see it as a way to get everything else free. Benefits are expected to pay for every day life, so although you might not be in a position to pay a large sudden bill, you should be in a position to pay regular payments rather than expecting the whole bill to be paid for you.
Many people on benefits, especially when they are still married can get credit. Have you approached any banks for loans?0 -
Aside from all the playground remarks and wooden spoon antics...just after having a look at a previous post of yours OP, are you still in reciept of DLA for your son? If so is there an avenue you can take in relationship to this?
And don't shoot me with this suggestion...is there anyway you can ask your ex to help maybe even labour wise all for the good of the children..0 -
There is no money spare so cannot save.
I have to say that having thought of this thread, it has left me feeling quite annoyed. Having two children, getting carer's allowance, tax credits and DLA for one of your children, what you currently receive in benefits must come to about £1,800 a month, that's not included the mortgage relief. Out of this, you must pay £250 a month for your mortgage and pay for normal bills, food etc...
Now only 5 years ago, I was a single mum to two children. I earnt a very good salary and paid 40% tax on part of it. Once this was taken out as well as my pension, I was left with about £2,450 with child benefit. So about £600 more than you a month....except that I also had to pay £750 for my mortgage (so £500 more than you do), £300 a month for childcare (wasn't entitled to any tax credits) and £150 in petrol to get to work. Add to this the full cost of children lunch meals and school trips, full cost of dental treatment, glasses etc.. and yep, you have significantly more disposable income at the end of the month than I had paying high taxes.
How would you have felt if I'd come here then to say that I was a single mum earning £43K but my home needed repair and could tax payers pay for it because I'm a single mum?0 -
Hi Pippa2000
Get in contact with your buildings insurer - it should be covered with just an excess to pay. Normal amounts are approx £250, but depends on what you did when you took the policy out. It is part of the structure of the house and if the chimney failed inside and many do, you could not have known as no one can climb up them and inspect them can they? You may be able to get a budgeting loan to cover the excess. You should be able to ring them even on a Saturday to report it and get the ball rolling so to speak.
My insurance for example is build/contents with an excess £100 with accidental damage and it covers all that.
And do ignore the nasty comments - let it rollover your head.0 -
Thats what home insurance is for, that would also be my best bet.0
