City break alone in Hamburg

Hi there

Just looking for advice really!

Me and my wife split up about two months ago, for various reasons, mainly I want to travel and have a good time and she wants kids and to settle down.

Me and my mate have booked a break to Prague for next March but it feel like ages away!

I have found a deal for Hamburg for £150 each, but im not sure he will go due to other commitments. Its £180 on my own which I can do.

Is it weird for a single man to go alone there? Im not there for the red light arears etc! Im into my metal/rock music. I know there are a few metal bars there, so once Im there I will be fine talking to strangers etc.

Basically Im asking you to tell me to stop being soft and just book it!

Book it, I travelled a lot by myself over the years, from Cyprus, Turkey, Tunisia, Mexico, Dom Rep, last single trip was Prague, as my daughter now travels with me.

I love it, the thing I would say s take a book then if you feel your somewhere that you mgt be lost as your single whip out the book, I've met many people travelling and I love it.

    Get it booked. xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • I just love travelling, (hate flying though!), I know I would end up chatting to somebody, it used to drive my ex mad, she would be sat on her own! Ive turned down having kids just because I want to go to Aus

    Two questions:

How likely is it that you would have a good time, or be miserable there?

If you decided not to go, what else could you do with the time and money that would make you feel at least as happy?

Your answer to the first question is clear from the OP: I would just warn that if you tell anyone you went to Hamburg on your own, they will assume that the Sex City was part of your programme.
  • It isn't my first choice, just the cheapest on Easyjet!
i just need to get away, not bothered what anyone thinks in doing.

i looked at Scotland on train, but it is dearer

Well I'm married with a family but I go on city break type trips alone every so often, and I love it. I go to the sort of places my wife and kids have no interest in, and at times they couldn't make anyway (ie in school term time). Some people (in fact probably most!) do think its weird, but who cares! A surprisingly large proportion of travellers do travel alone. Do stuff like walking tours where you'll meet interesting people, and if you go round museums etc you can do it at your own pace and not feel pressured into hurrying up, or waiting aroound for others to finish.

It's a completely different sort of holiday to travelling as a couple/family - where you're always looking for stuff to do which you can all enjoy and won't bore anyone too much... The main thing I miss when travelling alone is eating out, obviously you can eat out alone but it's pretty boring - so I tend to get snack type food on the go, or a quick pub type meal somewhere that has papers to read etc.

Have a look on tripadvisor forums they are very helpful and a lot of solo travellers, trip reports are worth reading to get an idea of what to do which interests you.

I do loads of European city breaks by myself and always have a great time. Find a bar (plenty of those in Hamburg) and you'll soon find someone to talk to about the beer, the city and things to do. Just have fun - do what you want, when you want and don't be shy. Nobody knows you and they'll never see you again.

Ever been to Munich? To be recommended. Beer gardens (and festival) great scenery, easy trips to Salzburg/ castles.
