clipping cats claws?

  • i'll definitely consider clipping, I have proper clippers for animal nails anyway for my bunny.

Now I see how they are able to prevent their cat clawing the furniture.

I've only ever done it to kittens because of the damage they do when getting used to their needle like claws. As soon as they start to go out I stop clipping.

With a house cat I'd probably feel different.

We do have a Fat Boy scratching post which one of ours loves to use - having destroyed every other one we've ever had. Our youngest though, who is a rescue, doesn't seem to use it, preferring fences and other available pieces of wood in the garden.

I think its an older cat. rather than a kitten.

Oh is it? I've not heard of declawing, it sounds horrible.

Yes, I understand that it is a very painful recovery for them. :(The claws also aid with walking and stretching as well as a defence mechanism against other animals if they do manage to get out.

Declawing is regularly done in the USA, they think its normal to remove a cats defences and climbing aid.. when I said it was a dreadful thing to do they were most offended.

Declawing is a barbaric process that involves partial amputation of the cat's toes.

A friend of mine in the US was planning on having it done to his cat. I persuaded him not to. Pointing out that it is considered as cruelty and illegal in Europe was persuasive.
  • I couldnt imagine ever doing something like that unless for medical reasons, it sounds like your basically chopping their toes off.

It is and it's a terrible thing to do.

Barney is a housecat and is only allowed into garden on a harness and leash. So I have clipped his claws when he has found himself 'velcroed' to the carpet or my clothes.
I find a good pair of human toenail clippers far easier to use than the traditional pet claw clippers.

We got our cats claws done by the vet during a routine visit.

They sell special clippers and instructions on how to do it properly.
