clipping cats claws?

I've heard from a friend that her neighbours also in rented clip their cats claws to protect the furniture.

I've not heard of this before, I clip my rabbits claws as for some reason even with all what he has including up to 10 hours a day free roam of a garden he still needs them clipped every once in a while.

Have you clipped your cats claws?

    Hi CharlieRabbit01

We clip our cats claws as they are house cats with supervised access to the garden. Our youngest cat, we clip his claws ourselves and have done so since he was young as we've played with his paws to get him used to being handled.

For our older cat, we have to take her to the vets as she gets so stressed. We got her when she was 2.5 years and her previous owners didn't treat her so well so if we try to clip her claws, she makes such a racket, you'd think you're trying to murder her plus I get just as stressed as she does so it's not good for either of us.

I wouldn't say it "protects" the furniture as they sharpen them again pretty quickly but as they don't climb trees outside, they don't get naturally worn back.

I clip my maine coon's claws, they are huge and if I dont clip them he accidentally rips holes in our clothes and he usually ends up cutting himself when he scratches. My other cat is a moggie and pretty small so her claws are a lot daintier and she's a lot more careful with them.

The cats both go outside, but they tend to sit on the grass more than anything so they dont get worn down.

After another night of being woken up 10 times by my mirror-scratching cat I'm seriously considering giving him scratch mittens tonight :D.

I've always clipped my cats claws especially as they got older and not out and about so much, just nip off the tip being careful not to go too far down and clip the nerve. They soon sharpen up again if the cat is active outside the house. I'd say it was easier than rabbits claws as they are not so thick and bulky..

yeah my boys claws are quite hard and we usually have to do his front feet one day and his back the next as he can get quite stressed.

I cant under stand why they dont wear naturally, he's got everything he needs but he is also a bunny.

I expect since we would like a siamese it'll be in most of the time, or thats our previous experience of the breed.
  • found out the the friends cat in question actually had their claws cut so they don't have any at all.

How old are the cats? I think declawing (if that is what you mean) is illegal in the UK.

I think its an older cat. rather than a kitten.

Oh is it? I've not heard of declawing, it sounds horrible.

    Been doing it for years.

Used my own small nail clippers then bought special rounded scissors for them. Do it every three weeks.

Declawing is illegal in the UK and Europe.
