What business is it of yours if the OP wants to spend £1200 on a ring?

It might not be what you'd do but people have different priorities - and different income & budgets.

I wouldn't presume to criticise you if you posted that you were looking to book a holiday for £5K - because it's none of my business what you choose to spend your cash on.

Do you have any relevant advice for the OP?

Lol, I was just going to answer with one word.

    ie Cheapskate

You said it much better than me.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Just curious, but how will the OP be 'in profit' from buying his fiancee a £1200 engagement ring? How is HE going to make any profit from it?

    Price of gold going up?

    Price of diamonds going up?

OK, maybe the OP wouldn't make a profit unless he sold the ring, but my point was that a diamond ring would hold its value far better than a car that cost £1200.
  • Look at it this way then the average wedding costs £18-£22k (apparently - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/10072716/Average-wedding-now-costs-more-than-18000.html)

    And it lasts a day.

Spending £1200 on an engagement ring that your wife will have for several decades is hardly crazy

Exactly. He will make nothing from it, unless he gets it back off her. Its a rubbish investment IMO... for him anyway.

If I had £1200 going spare, and I had the choice of buying a car or a ring; I know what I would spend it on: the thing that would give me years of practical use, and would save me a fortune on train fares, taxi fares, and bus fares, and would cut one hour long journeys to work to 10 minutes.

It's a no-brainer; buying a car is a far more sensible way to spend £1200.

But it's entirely up to the OP of course, what he spends his money on!

There are some real misery guts on here! This is at least the third time I've seen someone shot down for how much they want to spend on a ring or wedding day.

OP, I strongly suggest speaking to your partner and choosing a ring together. I know of a number of girls who hate their engagement rings but felt they couldn't tell their partners.

    Jeez!
    How pedantic are you!

OK, between the 2 of them (whoever ends up with the ring) the ring will probably be worth more than your crappy £1200 car in a few years' time.

But you're not the OP so what you'd choose to spend £1200 on is irrelevant.

Maybe the OP has a brand new Audi.

    Precisely!
And if thehappybutterly hadn't muddied the waters by suggesting he didn't spend his money on a ring (which is none of her business), this thread wouldn't have gone off-topic and sensible people would be giving sensible advice instead of discussing whether the £1200 budget would be better spent on a car.

I'm not sure if you're a guy or a girl but if you're a guy - I feel sorry for your partner!

    :T :rotfl:

If you worked out the cost of a live in cook, cleaner, nanny and lover, you'd find that £1200 was a sound investment!

    For the record:
The OP didn't ask which would be the better investment - £1200 on a car or £1200 on an engagement ring.

    He asked this:

I have set a budget of £1200 to spend on an engagement ring for my girlfriend. What should I expect to get for my money in terms of the 4 C's etc? Thank you in anticipation.
    Forget about the car.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with what the OP wants to know.

After 46 posts...I would expect a little more input from the OP too....

there is some good advice and links on this thread which he might want to have a read through...yes its long but if he really wants to know what he's going to get its a good pace to start...

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/192077

other than that my advice would be get out and have a look...
you've got the high street...and dont forget places like pawn brokers or even jewellers that sell second hand...that can represent excellent value.
If you live near either birmingham or brighton or london you have the jewellery quarter, the lanes and hatton garden near by...

But really until the op comes back and gives a bit of feedback on whats alraedy been offered ....theres no indication which way to suggest he spends his money

My OH presented me with a 'token ring' on the proposal, I later choose mine from an Etsy seller who does unique designs with custom metal and stone choices.
This is whats on my finger today:
