Part time hours refused as too many existing part timers

Looks like I have tO start looking for a new job then.
Thanks for all the replies.0 -
I've had my request declined as apparently there are too many part timers.
So although me doing the requested hours will not cause any issue to rhe business, my employer just cannot add another part timer.
Is this a valid reason to reject application?
Sounds to me like they are saying another part-timer would affect business. Maybe your rejection letter is'nt worded correctly or you have miss- read?0 -
You have requested 25 hours leaving 15..not many people looking for 15 hours due to WTC min being 16 hours, maybe that is also a factor.0

I was told in the meeting the company can employ a maximum of 5% part time employees.
Which, given the number of people stuck in part time jobs when they want/need full time hours to make ends meet is probably a good thing!
Maybe they will let you put your name on a waiting list for part time hours when someone leaves - if nobody wants to swop already.0 -
Have you actually asked the part timers if any of them would prefer full time hours as I suggested? You would have a good case if it were a straight swop.
The current part time employees are also mothers so cannot do more hours.
And if they wanted to get another part timer to make up my hours, surely an additional one hour to make it 16hours will not be a problem for the business?0 -
You have a full time contract with them, you are obligated to that contract. You can terminate that contract with notice any time but it does not mean the company has to offer you a new contract working part time. You asked them company to change the contract which can only be done through mutual agreement.
Companies need a few full timers to work round the clock, and then hire casuals and part timers to lend a hand during busy hours. They don't like rocking the boat and putting full time staff on part time and then looking for a new reliable full timer0 -

Part timers are not dependable. They usually have other things going on in their life that they need to tend to. Training overhead is doubled, there is no consistency and continuity. They need a full timer to keep things ticking over well0 -

Do you have any evidence to support this?0
