Disposing of unwanted gas cooker

Not entirely sure that this is the correct board... but here goes anyway!

Moving house soon to somewhere with no gas mains. I have arranged a Gas Safe engineer to cap the supply and now want to arrange for the cooker to be taken away.

Can it be recycled? I mean offered on Freecycle or Freegle? Or does it need taken downstairs (second floor flat) by a couple of burly men for the council to uplift?

Do scrap metal merchants collect???

It's such a shame not to be taking it with me as is dual fuel and I have enjoyed using it, but looking forward to my new induction hob.

Swings - roundabouts etc,

Next time you hear a scrap collector ringing his bell up you street, get him to take it away. If your area is like mine, you'll get 2 or 3 a day coming round.

No, no scrap collector here. Now I have an image of Steptoe and Son in my head and the theme tune rolling around my brain! :rotfl:

Anyone that even remotely considers buying a second hand gas appliance wants his bumps feeling. I don't know any RGI that would install one either - you'd be asking him to take full responsibility for something he has no idea how its been treated.

Sorry if that ruffles any feathers.

In our area just leave it on the drive/at the gate. It'll be swiped within a couple of days. We were woken one Saturday to hear people rooting around our back garden, emerged with a box of metal, dumped it in the back of a van and left quickly!

Couple of days! Good grief thats an eternity. Changed some ancient rads for a client recently that were not worth either he or I recycling. "What to do with them?" he said. "Put 'em up at the top of the drive", said I, "be gone in an hour". It took exactly 32 minutes. :D

We put an old gas cooker out the front last year, within 30 minutes, knock at the door, lady from round the corner asking if she could take it, told her yes but it is old but safe.

Some 3 months later, same lady knocked at the door asking if we still had the rubber gas pipe for it...cheek of it, told her no, but was helpful and gave her the directions to the nearest B&Q

Your local council will remove large items for a small fee. As long as you leave it in an easily accessible place at the front of your property, they usually charge a nominal fee (mine charges £15 for collecting up to four large items, free for a fridge or freezer) to clear large items.

I've had old mattresses removed by my council before.

If you're buying a new one then the store you purchase the new item from may also collect the old one for free.

I'd be hesitant to give it away as a working item to someone as it's a gas appliance and, just in case something unfortunate were to happen in the future, you wouldn't want it on your conscience.

If you decide to scrap your cooker it can be easy to remove loose bits. The oven door etc is normally a few small bolts. This makes it much lighter to move downstairs.
