I asked if they could recommend one but they said no just use anyone!

Ok. In that case instruct a good firm to carry out an inspection and repair and make them aware that you need a professional report to submit to the manufacturer which states, if possible, if this was a manufacturing fault.

If he determines your appliance was delivered with an inherent fault, we will cover the cost of that visit as the costs of a repair or an exchange.

That is the correct thing to do.

An inherent fault is one that was present at the time of sale but not necessarily apparent at that time.

In other words, the fault isn't due to misuse of fair wear and tear.

Your independent engineer will need to confirm that in his report.

It probably isn't good enough for the report to say something like "the thing doesn't work because widget xyz is broken".
It is far better for it to say "widget xyz is broken because of weak materials used in it's construction"... or something.
  • So what happened about the fridge?

I too have a problem with beko. I bought an upright freezer in September 2012 and specifically a Beko as I intended to put it in the garage and they were the only make suitable for outside. Unfortunately I returned last week from visiting friends to discover the freezer had broken and the entire contents defrosted. It had a twelve month manufacturers warranty but is just outside this. I cannot claim from the store as it was purchased from the now defunct Comet.
Have I any chance in claiming from Beko?
    Thanks for help.

Did you make the purchase with a credit card, or perhaps some other form of credit?

If so, read MSE's Section 75 Refunds article, and you will see that the lender is equally responsible.

    Have you spoken to Beko?
It is possible that they may be able to help you when you tell them Comet were the seller.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately we paid by debit card. I have contacted Beko but they tried to sell me a further years warranty for 160 which would cover this repair and any future faults for the next year. I feel trapped as Beko are the only make suitable for a garage.

You have told us that Beko is the only make of upright freezer suitable for an unheated garage.

    That simply isn't true.

Now, if you had said it was a fridge-freezer, I would've been more included to believe you... but you didn't say that.

I have a Hotpoint freezer in my unheated garage and it has worked fine for nearly twenty years and still going strong.

    Back to your current dilemma...
You need to decide your course of action.
You will either need to pay for a repair, take up Beko's offer or throw the thing away.

Yes I too had a Hotpoint chest freezer in the garage for many years but had changed to an upright as I can no longer reach into a chest one. Hence my remark about Beko seeming to be the only make available. Have given up and am hoping this was a rogue one as I am going to buy another. Thanks for your help
  • I am going to buy another.

You haven't said what's wrong with it, may just need a new thermostat or something?
