I have just had life insurance/critical illness cover declined.
Do they do a credit check as a matter of course?
Thanks in advance.

No.
It will be purely medical/lifestyle/occupation.
What did you put on your application about such issues and we'll see if there's a provider who might be prepared to take you on.
It's very unusual to be declined life cover. Was the decline for the critical illness cover or for both?I am a mortgage broker. thank you
I dont smoke, only a moderate drinker, dont do any dangerous sports, Im 5ft 7, weight 19st 11 (probably the issue),
I had applied for both.. decreasing cover for £61,000
not really got anything medically wrong with me... have IBS, and have been tested for slight hearing loss within the past 12 months but no treatment needed and have been discharged0 -
What's your age and what's the term of the cover?
For some insurers, BMI would be a major issue. Your height/weight ratio is likely to be the problem.
Who did you apply to and were you advised to use that firm, or simply found it yourself?I am a mortgage broker. Hi again
It was via a broker for legal and general.
I put a request for quotes in compare the meerkat and am being bombarded with phone calls now.
I may be able to get cover from work.. but as yet they not got back to me.
It believe it is over 27 years.
thanks0 -
Slimming world is good I hear.
Why do you think you are getting phone calls?
Never put your correct number or email etc unless you like the spam that will follow.0 -

I agree with Kingstreet in that your height/weight ratio is almost definitely the issue. Your body mass index (BMI) comes out at around 42 and several providers have limits which don't allow them to offer cover for clients with a bmi over 40.
There will be providers who will offer life cover, however, I'd expect critical illness to be a no-no across the market I'm afraid as the bmi limits for this tend to be significantly less than those for life cover alone.
You need to speak to an IFA or a protection specialist who can speak (or is willing to speak) to the underwriting departments to check a company's stance before another application is completed.0 -

Check the initial disclosure document you were given in your early dealings. Does it say;-
"We offer products from a range of insurers for Term Assurance, critical Illness, Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance and Buildings and Contents"
or
"We only offer products from a limited number of insurers for term assurance, critical illness assurance, income protection, mortgage payment protection insurance and buildings and contents. Ask us for a list of insurers we offer insurance from"
or
"We only offer products from a single insurer?"
The final option would denote a tied agent of Legal & General.
If they are tied, find an IFA who can offer you whole market advice.I am a mortgage broker. can numerous applications to different providers have a detrimental effect on my application (like a credit check)0
