Biggest threat to cyclists I've seen recently is probably me.

I've been noticing them far too late on unlit country lanes after dark.

It would help if they had lights.

The mistake you just made was not realising that this thread is populated by cyclist victims who can do no wrong.

Logic fails to penetrate the combination of tinfoil, and the chanting of "motorists are evil, cyclists are perfect, motorists are evil, cyclists are perfect, motorists are evil, cyclists are perfect"

But what about those irresponsible motorists?

Feel free to begin a debate about that on the motoring forum. :D

    Just stating my own observation.

I'm quite sympathetic to the cyclist. They get a poor deal when it comes to cycle lanes that are beautifully coloured but 17 yards long, or three miles long but two feet too narrow. Or suffer from a complete lack of consideration from motorists.

There are some, however, who could take a few basic steps towards making everybody safer, including themselves.

    and theres the point.
pretty much any thread relating to cycling will have itself quanified by those red light jumping, pavement cycling ninjas.
If someone posts on the motoring board about having a crash.
it isnt assumed both drivers were drunk at the time

No, the point is that there is an awful lot that cyclists could do to help themselves - lights, reflective/high viz, not jumping red lights, not cycling up the inside of trucks, not cycling on pavements, using cycle paths - but whenever such suggestions are made, it is always the victim mentality of "it's never our fault, its always the big bad motorist".

If cyclists did everything they could do to stay safe, then that argument would work. They don't, so it doesn't.

Which cyclists are these? You are simply making my point for me.

What did this cyclist do wrong?

Lights - what sort? The glow worms that you see some cyclists have? The silly head-torches that you see some wearing instead of a front light. High-Viz - Good in daytime, but was it reflective and suitable for a dark country lane?

But in reality, their biggest problem was positioning. If I was cycling down that road, would I stop in the middle to turn right. No chance. If you are a vulnerable road user you need to do everything you can to keep yourself safe, not just say, because one person who had lights was involved in an accident, I won't bother.

And for balance, who was the biggest threat to this cyclist -

So you didnt read the article. The cyclist was stationary and waiting to turn right
The car driver cut the corner and hit him
So what could the cyclist do? levitate across the road?
You seem determined its his fault,so lets hear it.
If need more than one example Im happy to provide many more
You will note no prison time for the driver in this case
