Biggest Threats to Cyclists?

"Only 400" silly cyclists.... ONLY?? Maybe if the Silly Cyclist channel had more people filming then that figure may even be worse!
Anyway... let's agree to dis-agree as we aren't going to change each other's take on this. Mine is simply that more action should be taken against the minority (about 400) of cyclists who ride recklessly and break the traffic laws thus putting themselves in danger.
I'm bored now so i'm on my bike outta here!
Your choice, but I'll leave you with this fictional titbit - if we increase the 400 journeys to 1,000,0000 journeys so an increase of 250000% in silly cyclists thats means only 0.25% of all journeys made will have a silly cyclist, still not exactly breaking the bank is it?
So your point that we need to do more regarding reckless cyclists and those break the traffic laws kinda loses its impact when even at vastly inflated numbers its a tiny minority that you want to focus on:rotfl:
So I'm not even going to agree to disagree with you, your simply wrong and prejudiced against cyclists. Good bye:T
Now hopefully as you've pushed on, we can continue the proper discussion. There was some good points made regarding segregation and visibility.0 -

Time for a less flippant post
Between 2008-2012 (inclusive) there were 555 cyclists killed in Great Britain. (source here)
There were a further 14,023 seriously injured. Taken together, that means 4% of cyclists who are seriously injured on the road die.
For accidents involving adult cyclists, drivers are responsible in 60-75% of incidents, suggesting there were about 10,000 cyclists killed or seriously injured between 2008-2012 where the driver was solely responsible. Cyclists were solely responsible in about 3,000 serious accidents (note:this methodology is a bit flawed, eg, mixing all accident with percentages only involving adults, but it should be accurate enough at an order-of-magnitude level).
This report is an excellent summary of data, some highlights (based on 2008 data):
78% of incidents involving cyclists being killed or seriously injured happen in daylight
Over a quarter of fatal collisions involve front of car hitting rear of bike
Passing too close to the cyclist was judged to be a contributory factor in a quarter of serious accidents involving HGVs, buses and coaches.
When cyclists were to blame for a serious accident it was due to a failure to look properly 43% of the time, and 20% due to a cyclist entering road from pavement (often children).
About 20% of all serious accidents involve child cyclists.
Serious accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians account for less than 1% of accidents.
Serious accidents involving a collision between two cyclists account for almost no serious accidents.
50% of all cyclist fatalities involve collision with a car/taxi
Disobeying red lights was not one of the top 10 factors for cyclists involved in serious accidents
About 5% of fatalities and serious accidents involved cyclists not displaying lights0 -
Thanks a lot for some useful data, which I hope will give the contributors and readers of this thread some food for thought and perhaps dispel a few myths.
In the TRL Collisions Involving Pedal Cyclists report the "18% of fatal cycle accidents involved a HGV" statistic again stands out. As I've pointed out in some earlier posts on this thread, I believe there are too many HGVs on the UK's roads and too few restrictions on the roads they may use.0 -
Someone answer me this please. A cyclist goes through a red light causing a car going through green to slam on their brakes and getting hit from behind by the following car. Cyclist turns round, gives the finger and unidentified rides off into the sunset. Do the police attending the incident register it as an incident involving a bike? Or just another tailender for the insurance companies to argue about.0

Unfortunately, this thread is full of the good old "Dead Cat On The Table" tactic that Boris himself has been employing with his comments on helmets and headphone, or as I like to call it the "Look over there so you can't see what's actually going on over here" method.
The facts are simple.
- 6 cyclists have been killed by HGV's in 14 days.
- A helmet would have saved none of them.
- None of them were jumping red lights.
- None of them were wearing headphones.
Yet this thread is full of people alluding that cyclists are the problem because they don't wear helmets and jump red lights.
Also amusing to see the people criticising cyclists are basing their criticism on youtube videos and public opinion rather than actual cold hard facts and statistics.
What about hard video eveidence?

Now this is up where I live and the amount of cyclists that do this, go the wrong way down one way streets, shout at people(me) who are pedestrians crossing the roaad on the green man and they try and knock me over but I get the abuse, is quite frankly shocking. Add to that the ones who do not wear helmets even at night and also do not have lights on their bikes is frankly staggering.
Now I am well aware that this is not all cyclists but as you can see by the video and the FACTS that it produces there are an awful lot fo them who do not follwo the laws of the road."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

London is not the whole of the UK; it is it's own special country.0 -

LIke speeding cars,drug driving,illegal parking,no MOT,no insurance etc etc
Whats your point?
Helmets are not a legal requirement. By not wearing one they deserve what they get?
Why do speed bumps exist? because (i wont put some as you didnt)drivers cant be trusted to obey the signed limit. so a physical barrier is put in to inconvenience everyone0
