Biggest Threats to Cyclists?

  • With the weather turning cold this week I'm terrified of the prospect of being knocked off by some twit peering out of a 6" gap in his windscreen while the rest of his windows are frozen or steamed up. No hi-viz/light combo going to make a difference there! Chuck in the low sun and I might as well be wearing a 'hit me' sign.
  • High Viz is also a state of mind. You can be as yellow as you like but if you're glued to the kerb you can't be seen very easily anyway.
    It's only numbers.

No need to wait for ice

In the first pic,the passenger was leaning out to tell the driver where the give way line was.
The windscreen was completely misted up

Was musing today about what some folk think living in London is like. Starting with the initial comment:

To which I replied about one of my transport options:

Which later in the thread was commented upon:

That 60 minute door-to-door journey breaks down as 10 minute walk to train station, 22 minute train ride (most of time seats available) and 15 minute walk to work at the other end (Tube is an option, but is barely faster and will be crowded). Add in a usual 5-10 minute delay of train and it usually takes the best part of 60 minutes. Journey home is less pleasant, and can often be crowded, but no more than any other train and I'm only on it for 20-25 minutes.

Many people have far less pleasant commutes over much further distances, facing longer delays with nil chance of a seat. Many people commute from Portsmouth, Southampton, Oxford and Cambridge and it was those people I always equated with horrendous commutes.

But if my commute is 'horrendous' just who is it that is benefiting from London's 'excellent public transport?' :D

Comparing commutes is good to show people why cycling is better, for those of us that can do either (cycle or public transport) commute.

My cycle commute is roughly 60 mins door > door, 15 mins to change/shower at the end so 75 mins. Plus I get to ride my bike for 2 hours every day :D
Any issues? I broke a spoke once, carried on with care and arrived no later. Punctures touch wood have been absent so far this year.

Train commute, is 15 mins change/shower at start, 20 min walk, 45 min train with seat for half of that, 15 min walk. 95 mins, and I dont get to ride my bike :(.
Any issues? Train is late at least once a day, as I have to change trains this often adds an extra 30 mins if I miss connection.

Hands down for me cycling is preferred, and I'm 100's of miles from London!

A prime example of the biggest threat to cyclists.

    Emma Way: #Bloodycyclists

"definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier. I have right of way - he doesn't even pay road tax!"

"I was quite angry at the mannerism of the cyclist on the road. My point of view is that he was on my side of the road - that's not the way you drive so I find that quite disrespectful."

22 years old. Driving a maximum of five years. Wrongly thinks she pays for and therefore owns the road. Drives dangerously with regard to vulnerable road user.
She regrets getting caught, not injuring a cyclist. Too arrogant to drive, but she has been allowed to keep her license.

    worse than that.....
Leaving court today Miss Way refused to speak to reporters citing “an exclusive TV deal”. A spokesman for ITV confirmed that Miss Way would be appearing on Daybreak on Wednesday morning, but refused to confirm if the former trainee accountant, who lost her job as a result of the incident, would be paid for her appearance: “We would never discuss fees.”

Posted a link to the story yesterday post #229. ;)

Found guilty of failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it, and lost her job. Shame ;)

Edit: Are those photos she has taken whilst driving?

Hi all, I just popped in here to mention something my London truck driver Brother just said to me.

He is saying if there was a day time lorry ban, residents would be up in arms by being kept awake by not only noisy lorries (especially unloaded trucks - horrendous noise as they go by), but also the fact the sites they deliver to such as building sites would have to be lit up with arc lights that in turn work off noisy combustion generators.

He also said everyone involved in the ecosystem would want more pay for working nights (just as you yourselves would) and that the costs would be passed onto customers in this cost of living crisis environment.

Just some thoughts I felt might be of interest to you.

I hope this idiot has had it explained to her what the tax is that she pays and what it is for.

Drives me mad that one and its amazing how many people use that argument (it probably has been here, I can't be bothered to look back!)

Lost her job, fined and 7 points. Plus no £££ from Daybreak apparently. Now being cyber bullied apparently :rotfl:

I don't feel guilty in the slightest about been cheery she has suffered as such as she only seems to regret her actions because of the personal consequences, she still maintains the cyclist was 'disrespectful' (well wouldnt you be if someone hit and runned you) and blames her actions on her age.

Frankly she's a disgrace as she still does not see how it was her fault, despite the guilty verdict.

We won't know until we try and it doesnt have to be through the night but perhaps a rush hour ban could be a good start no LGVs 0700-0900 and 1600-1800 for example?
