Kindle Fire or Hudl?
Comments

Went to buy an Kindle HD Fire 7" at my local Tesco today for my wife's Birthday present as I've got one which I'm very happy with. They had them on prominent display but still at the original price of £159.00
. I asked an assistant "Weren't they supposed to be £119?" He went to check and disappeared for ages before coming back with new ticket price in hand, confirming it was indeed on sale for £119.00 :T.
I was going to take a look at the new Hudl but I couldn't see it anywhere (the assistant had gone by that time). I don't think they are too on the ball when it comes to promoting the various tablets in their store.
Incidentally Amazon also selling the 7" Kindle HD Fire for £119.00 at the moment, presumably as they are being superseded by a new version?
Either that or just to compete with the Hudl.
Although it is a year old I believe.0 -

I bought a tablet while in the US in May from a Chinese trader who was selling them for £40 and I discovered that he was paying less than $10 for them , The Hudl I saw in Tesco yesterday looked identical and seemed to have the same spec .Looks like the Tesco buyers have struck gold with this one.0

The kindle fire hdx has a much higher spec than the huddle. If you wait a week or so you should be able to get one from amazon uk. The price is likely to be £150 ish so they obviously cost more than the hudl. You get what you pay for though. If you don't mind being tied to amazon get the kindle, otherwise I would probably go nexus unless you only want to spend £60.
Don't forget if you are a prime member the kindle gives you a free book every month.0 -
Stick an Otterbox or similar on a Tesco Hudl and then tell me it feels flimsy0

It's amazing that one person can say it feels cheap and another says build quality is good and another robust
It depends what the user is comparing it too. Against an iPad it feels cheap; against a cheapo Chinese pad it feels positively Rolls-Royce like!
Best thing to do is nip down to Tesco and have a touchy-feely!0 -

Aye.
I have a tendency to rate things like tablets against my 5 year old Sony ereader for build, as to me that is pretty much the gold standard (aluminium construction and built like a very light, brick outhouse).
The Hudl felt cheaper than the Kindle Fire HD (when I tried it in Tesco I could feel some flex in the casing, and a slight lag, which i didn't notice with the kindle), and much cheaper than the Sony ereader (which has nicer build materials as well as being much more solidly built).
But it also felt better than some of the other cheap tablets/ereaders I've tried.
At £60 I suspect the hudl is going to be nearly impossible to beat for the price.
At £120 it gets harder as you're at the price point of the slightly older Kindle fire HD, the Google nexus 7 (2012) etc, and nearly two thirds of the cost of more highly rated Nexus 7 (2013), let alone any new models from Amazon.
It's like a lot of things you handle, how you perceive it can be quite subjective, based largely on your experience with similar devices*.
It's one of the reasons I've spent the last month+ looking at new ereaders and tablets and trying to find places that let you try them out - I don't want to buy something I'm going to actively dislike.
*Keyboards and mice are a great example of that, given that simple things like the thickness of the backing plate, or placement of screws can affect the feel and build quality of them (badly placed, or slight changes in thickness can result in the keyboard flexing slightly), let alone things like the choice of button type.0
