Kindle fire HD has a very nice screen, but you are tied to amazon, so have no access to google play store (not officially). Plus amazon market has far fewer apps than play store, and the gap is getting wider, as a lot of developers wont touch amazon. So amazon market is very restricted
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

You're giving the wrong advice here mate.
The Hudl DOES have an sd card slot while the Nexus does NOT !

also there have yet to be any proper in depth reviews of the Hudl and from the early reviews I've read so far it stands up to the competition pretty well

I wouldn't say being tied to Amazon was a plus either

Sorry, you're right, I've been looking at so many tablets and ereaders* recently I got confused about the memory card situation.

Being tied to amazon is really quite subjective - I know some people find it really handy that they can get things like their books/music etc from amazon onto it very easily (and have tied to their account), but it's not a major plus from my POV.

I will say I did try a hudl in Tesco the other day (Saturday I think, they had one on display), and wasn't massively impressed with it -it felt sort of cheap (possibly not surprising at it's price point) and didn't quite respond as well as some others I've tried (might be because it's a display one).
I preferred the Kindle Fire/HD for feel and responsiveness (but not for their non standard android on the kindle's), same with a nexus and samsung i have tried.

*I've been trying to decide if I should go with a new dedicated ereader (most of the current models have some plus point I like, and some negative point**), a tablet, or a cheap basic ereader and a cheapish tablet.

**I love the res/size of the new Aura HD (but no physical buttons and basic touch screen), but the paperwhite has a newer version of the screen (whiter) but has silly limits on side loaded books (and no physical buttons and smaller screen), and the PRS-T3 has a slightly better touch screen, good collections but older display and smaller - argh:p

There's quite a bit of feedback on the *Hudl User forums. The feedback all seems positive at the moment.

For the price it represents very good value for money. It's pretty much unlocked and not bogged down with too much unwanted software, build quality is good, too.

The main plus point (For me) over Chinese tablets at a similar price is the guarantee. You tan simply take it back if it goes wrong. Try doing that with a Chinese supplier or ebay or whatever.

(*I don't think I can post a link so google for it or have a look at my profile-it's in the contact details section )

Kindle fire only access to amazon market, I would say no to that.
    Tesco hudl's spec looks OK.

Asus Memopad HD7 at £129. An alternative from those two

I have a Nexus 7 2012 edition - it is annoying not having a SD slot, but you have to ask if you would use it anyway? It is really reliable, I got a bluetooth keyboard for it so I can chat on facebook etc.
Its great for general browsing, silly games, checking emails and watching youtube videos/iplayer, looking at photos etc. It can multitask a lot of things at once so is good for that. I think it is more aimed at adults though.

As with all tablets it doesn't come with flash so it can be a faff about to get iplayer/4od to work but it is possible :)
A lot of them come with the problem of a shadow ring on the screen also.

My friend just got a HUDL for half price due to tesco double-up voucher deal and she really likes it, someone said it has a SD card slot too.
It is very robust, has a good screen from reviews and I think sounds the better deal at the moment especially for a child/teenager (guessing your daughter isn't an adult)

Saving for a year in Japan.
I need around £10,000. Help me get there!

I have the Nexus 7 (2013) and am very impressed with it.

Not being tied to Amazon or Apple is a positive.

It's amazing that one person can say it feels cheap and another says build quality is good and another robust lol

I suppose it all comes down to what you're comparing it too and what your expectations are.

I want to see some proper reviews, come on Techradar and the like, pull ya fingers out :)

The Kindle Fire HD 7" is on offer at £119 at Tesco direct too, so they would both be the same price, I'm useless with anything technical :)

Went to buy an Kindle HD Fire 7" at my local Tesco today for my wife's Birthday present as I've got one which I'm very happy with. They had them on prominent display but still at the original price of £159.00 :(. I asked an assistant "Weren't they supposed to be £119?" He went to check and disappeared for ages before coming back with new ticket price in hand, confirming it was indeed on sale for £119.00 :T.
I was going to take a look at the new Hudl but I couldn't see it anywhere (the assistant had gone by that time). I don't think they are too on the ball when it comes to promoting the various tablets in their store.
Incidentally Amazon also selling the 7" Kindle HD Fire for £119.00 at the moment, presumably as they are being superseded by a new version?
