You show initiative - but only by asking! :-)

Slow cooker is great for stews and makes a really good bolognese sauce (perhaps a small camping gas stove to brown things first and cook other things) but just make sure that the water added is much less as it will not boil off. Spaghetti might seem to be a problem but just substitute with vermicelli or instant noodles that only need boiling water from your kettle.
...and then there's a salad or two, a tuna and bulgar wheat risotto, kippers only need boiling water, other fish poached in the microwave, cheese on toast (toaster and microwave), similarly beans on toast, tinned produce that just need warming, BBQ (outside only!) if you have one, scrambled egg (microwave), 'ready' soups, eat out a bit (small price compared to most kitchen costs if you don't go overboard), fish 'n' chips (and other take away food), pot noodle (yuck but a possibility for a day or two), ploughmans lunch, a pie or two......................ah the list's endless and then there's microwaved 'steamed' puddings and .... and .....

Do you have a coolbox and someone handy with a freezer? Will soon be cool enough to keep some foodstuffs outside for a short time, such as milk, in a shady spot especially if under a wet towel and out of the way of rodents!

Hope some of these suggestions are of use.......
  • I think I got enough ideas, thanks to all! Our new fridge won't arrive till later (the kitchen fitter is in charge of all the appliances), so can't use this either.. I've found a small fridge on ebay for £10, hopefully won't go up much more and I can get it!

If it was cold enough outside it would be great to keep food just in the garden :). but it's been > 10 degrees so far so not a good idea...
  • We did exactly this. Well, still are really - we've been over 4 months without a kitchen now and I've well and truly had enough!

ETA - we also batch-cooked a load of meals which could be frozen, easily defrosted and heated through in a microwave

Four months?? Oh dear. I was two months without kitchen and got really fed up by the end. Mine wasn't a planned project (J0*n L$wis flooded my old kitchen in a diswashwer installation gone wrong) so I wasn't well prepared at all. I lived on microwave meals mainly. Thank god that's over...
  • I really hope mine doesn't take that long!! The new kitchen is already in the garage... let's hope the builder comes on Monday (and the rest of the days..).

Won't spend £100, the ones I've found so far are £10 - £20 and I will sell it afterwards for a similar amount....(I hope!)

When I moved out to Italy I couldn't find a plumber to connect the gas cooker and sink so managed for months and months with microwave and camping stove and lots of nibbles with my early evening apperitivi at the local wine bar!

Just moved back to the UK this summer and kept the milk cool with a damp cloth around it (cool through evaporation), and as the gas hob had been condemned back to the camping stove! As an interim measure I bought one of those stand alone induction hobs from Robert Dyas and I've just had lunch using just that: new pots and carrots, seared red pepper and rump steak: easy enough to do on the single hob.

New hob and oven should be going in soon so less juggling and the induction hob might make a useful student present!
  • We decided to buy the little fridge in the end, the old one is already gone! (sold on ebay for much more than I thought I would get, so very happy!).

Doing well so far, it's not easy living without the kitchen (specially when it comes to do the washing..), but we haven't been bored with food so far, still haven't eaten a single take-away or ready-made meal. :)
