New kitchen fitted next week

Hi all,

We are having a new kitchen fitted next week and it means from monday we won't have a fridge or anywhere to cook.. we prefer not to go out or do takeaways, but I'm not sure how long we can last eating ready-made meals or sandwiches..

Any tips on how to survive without a kitchen??

Thanks :o

Can you not put fridge in another room? I would use a microwave or slow cooker if I couldn't use my oven or hob.

Do you not have a microwave, slow cooker, toaster etc? Can't you keep your fridge somewhere else for the "duration".

How long do you expect the work to take?

The fridge is very old and does not work properly (it's no-frost, and full of ice!!!).
The only place we could put it is the living room where we have laminate, I'm too worried it might leak and ruin the floor... I might buy a small fridge if I manage to find a cheap one on ebay...

They builder said it would take a week, but we reckon it will be 2 weeks....

I do have a slow cooker, although I haven't managed to cook anything decent on it yet... might give it a go!

Defrost the old fridge thoroughly before you move it to the living room. Then set it on a tray in the living room so that if it leaks, the tray will hold the water.

No point in spend £100 on a fridge for a week!

Alternatively, try your local freecycle to see if anyone is getting rid of a fridge, or ask your neighbours if any of them have space in their fridges for milk/butter for a few days.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Won't spend £100, the ones I've found so far are £10 - £20 and I will sell it afterwards for a similar amount....(I hope!)

When I was in this situation recently I put the fridge (also very old) into the (small) dining room on a scrap of vinyl flooring which I had in the garage. I had the microwave on the dining table as well as a hotplate. Some of the kitchen stuff went into plastic drawers (something like this but with four drawers: http://www.therange.co.uk/6-drawer-plastic-tower-silver//the-range/fcp-product/56546 ), same for the food. Kettle, coffee machine, mugs and cups went on a camping table.

The downside is that now my garage is filled with plastic drawers, camping table, hotplate etc which I no longer need. Any takers...?

Are you getting a new fridge? Can you use that?

We used a microwave and had a good stock of ready meals ready (home made curries, chilli etc) that we could do with micro rice and microwave cooked veg. It's also worth asking if anyone has a camping hob you can borrow (we were going to borrow my parents', but they went camping the week of our fit!). We also left the oven connected to the electric throughout the fit (except for tiling day) so we could still use it for things like pie and chips. I did find it hard though, and think microwave meals are awful! Once our hobs were reconnected we cooked up an amazing stir fry as I was getting fresh food cravings

Our kitchen stuff lived in boxes on the floor of the lounge. Was pretty bad tbh, but we worked long (8am-11pm) days to do the kitchen so didn't spend much time in the lounge. We also fitted the new top cupboards (and filled them) before removing the base cupboards so that halved the amount of 'stuff' out at anytime.

I could manage on ready meals and/or sandwiches indefinitely. In fact virtually all my food comes out of the freezer.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

We did exactly this. Well, still are really - we've been over 4 months without a kitchen now and I've well and truly had enough!

ETA - we also batch-cooked a load of meals which could be frozen, easily defrosted and heated through in a microwave
