my definition of lefty is anyone who likes massive benefits and welfare along with the employment of thousands of uneccessary people by the govt. i do like that "non-essential" staff have been told not to come in. a clue in the name perhaps?? non-essential.

    .

Non-essential staff include people like those who look after the main tourist attractions. While its not essential to have, for example, the Smithsonian museums open, the US balance of payments would soon suffer if tourists stopped coming and these staff would soon be essential. At present those inconvenienced have no choice (they are on holiday), but if it goes on for a few weeks they will surely begin cancelling their holidays.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
