Even though there are no paper licences I would have expected a reminder of the DD. Have you been in touch to see what the TVL policy is on this?

But on the TV Tax Website, is prominantly features a link to only get your licence by email and wants your DD.
I say, this is peoples choice.
I am currently correctly licensed as not requiring one. As notified to the TV Tax Office.0 -

And if you read the TVL site you will see that despite your assertion no-one is being forced to pay by direct debit.

Do what I do.
Pay annually but by Card manually (CC with Cashback points, usually).
They then have to e-mail or write asking for payment.0 -
Sounds like you are best switching to Rodders53 idea of paying by card - that way you get the reminder to pay rather then an annual Direct Debit payment - which since they haven't changed the amount the notification you got last time is still valid..0
