  • Got my boy back from his dental op 30 minutes ago. Everything went well and he didnt need an extraction so that was great. He's very groggy and when I let him out his box, he was staggering around like a drunk! Ive put him in a dark and quiet room to sleep it off. Im so glad he's back!

Glad everything went ok and it's great news that he didn't need any extractions :)
  • My sisters dog, a tibetan spanial (looks like a hairy pug) had the very same pooy breath. You could smell him from the other side of the room - pity he wanted to sit in your lap peching into your face all the time
Vet extracted several teeth and cleaned up all the plaque - smells like roses now bless him. :j

Our old cat had to have a dental at about the age of 10. We were recommended to use Hills Science Plan Dental biscuits after that. You don't need to completely swap to this food if you don't want to, providing he has a small handful a day he should be OK. Our cat lived to 20 and never had anymore teeth problems. The biscuits are deliberately quite big so they scrape the teeth as your cat crunches them.

OK, got the boys to the vet this afternoon and it turns out Mr Halitosis has some really bad tartar build-up and his gums are bleeding. I feel terrible but also relieved that it's not something more serious.

Back on Wednesday for a dental op under a general anaesthetic and a week's worth of antibiotics :(

I'll get some advice from the vet on how to prevent this in future. Preferably something hands-off! You get chew bones for dogs which help control plaque build-up - is there anything similar for our feline friends?[/QUOTE]

There is Logic toothpaste which you can brush on with a finger brush but I put a pea sized bit on my finger, like its a treat and my boy licks it off twice a day.

I've done this religiously his whole 15 yr life and his teeth and gums are perfect.

I use Logic on my two cats. 10 & 12 respectively. All their teeth & never had dental work (cleaning) done. I apply on the sides of their mouths with a cotton bud - weekly to be honest - daily is a bit of a faff!

Dental dried food is expensive & I don't think it works as well. I feed 50/50 dried - (burns dried) & currently Butchers Classic wet (although may change soon when I can find a cheap/good quality alternative due to being now being alot more jelly than meat).
biscuits like Go-Cat & Whiskas contains sugars & other additives - bad for teeth
