cat with very bad breath - update!

My 8 year old male cat has suddenly developed really stinky breath. He doesnt appear to be ill, he's eating normally, he's not pawing at his mouth, he's not lost weight. Cant comment on his toilet habits - he's very much an outdoor cat!
He smells a bit foody so not like the smell of a rotten tooth.
Im going to make an appointment with the vet next week anyway for his yearly check up but does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it? I cant bear to cuddle him just now

definitely needs vet"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170

Glad you are taking him to the vet. As well as teeth problems, bad breath can be an indicator of kidney or liver problems. Vet may want to take a blood test. Not sure if they still need to starve for any of these. May be an idea to ring up the vet and check.
If the problem has come on suddenly and is bad, I probably wouldn't leave it until next week to go to vets.It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

I just got another whiff and he's lying about 5 feet away from me. Its almost like a 'dirty bum' smell (which its not). Oh my poor boy0

Could be teeth even if its not a rotten tooth.0

Thanks for your advice everyone. I'll phone the vet tomorrow and see what they say. Ma wee boy!0 -
I've got the vet tomorrow for his annual check up and innoculations and I mentioned his stinky breath when I made the appointment. The lady on the phone didn't seem overly worried but did tell me to call back if things got worse over the weekend. Thankfully things haven't got worse as in any new symptoms, but my lord, he stinks!
Fingers crossed everything is OK and a wee teeth brush will sort things out.0 -
Ask the Vet to check for the Corona virus. My girl's first symptom was appalling breath.0

Have you looked in his mouth? One of my boys once had stinky breath, when we looked in his mouth we found a piece of wood wedged in the roof of his mouth, it was a piece of one of those wide wooden skewers you sometimes get satay on.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
