Made my first recipe from my choice of book - Slimming World Family Feasts, of salt and pepper fish fingers & chips. Was really nice.

I used pouting instead of cod as cod is far too expensive.

I'm loving this thread and off to do the shopping for my first Hairy Dieters - How to Love Food and Lose Weight recipe. The first chapter is all breakfasts and quite easy stuff - I'm going to do the first one for brunch - will report back later!

I had a chicken to roast today and thought I might as well see what Jamie did rather than do my usual chook stuffed with Paxo and roast until falling apart. :embarasse

So page to 196 of Jamie's MoF 'Perfect Roast Chicken' fortunately I had half an old lemon in the fridge and used some dried thyme instead of fresh. I would never have thought to roast veggies in same dish as the meat, so this was a new one for me. I didn't have celery so threw in some sliced up pumpkin instead. It all seemed like a bit of a faff at the start with veggies having to be prepared before I could get going with roasting the chook, however it made for an easier finish as I then only had to do the potatoes and gravy afterwards.

Verdict It was a winner and whilst I would have preferred my chicken cooked a bit slower and longer, I Love, love, loved the roasted veggies and wish I had done more, as I ate half the carrots while serving up. ;)

I thought I would miss the stuffing and was half tempted to do some separately, but decided to go without and the roasted onion made up for it.

Toasted Crumpet with Warm Spiced Berries, Yoghurt and Honey.

Ok, I've done it! To be fair, this first one can hardly be called a recipe, they do make you scoot the berries round a pan with a bit of spice but essentially the majority of the cooking is done in a toaster!

Nothing in this one I wouldn't normally eat so a really easy start for me. Tasted quite nice, not sure I would bother warming the berries another time though. The next recipe is a homemade museli and I might put that together today to eat during the week. 5 more breakfast recipes to go!

I am going to use the dinner lady's cookbook, which should mean that DS will eat most of it.

That's a great choice VJsmum, especially if you have to convince kids to eat what you cook. I had that book out from the library a while ago and the recipes all looked yummy!

I'd not heard of the Dinner Lady book. Might order that one from the library, too.

Kiwisaver - some years back I tried a J Oliver recipe for garlic, thyme and lemon roast chicken. I never thought in a million that my beloved traditional roast chicken could be removed from its top slot in our week but it toppled down when we tried Jamie's recipe. Delish!

emg - those fruity crumpets look right up our street. How did you cook the berries?

I have been cooking for 50 years, always peeled and boiled my veg, only recently discovered the delight of roasted veg, now just bung it all in, don't even peal now. I still roast potatoes separately though to get them really crisp.

Literally just pushed them round a pan on medium heat with a teaspoon of mixed spice until they went a little bit squishy. Took 5 minutes tops!
