royal mail compo limit

Im just wondering, say I buy an item for £20 and sell for £30... Would royal mail pay out on the sold price or bought price?

Edit: assuming it goes missing

If you're the seller, you claim for what you paid for it, as that's your loss.

So based on the quoted figures, I should send by standard mail with £20 compensation limit,, rather than tracked for £50? This will save me £1 per item.

Also, say I pay £25 for an item, then can I claim the max £20?, Assuming less than 1 in 5 goes missing (extremely unlikely) ill be much better off sending standard mail than paying £1 extra everytime for tracked.

    Am I right?

Yes. Make sure you get proof of postage, otherwise you won't be able to make a claim.

    Has the t&c's of compensation.

"Where an item is lost or damaged beyond repair then it is the amount it cost the customer to acquire, purchase or manufacture the item subject to adjustment to take account of condition, age and depreciation"

So they will pay what you bought it for not what you sold it for.

Also I have heard of people being refused any compensation on these forums because they didn't buy a high enough level to cover the item.

OP have a read of the postage sticky, but it seems you have the general idea.

If 1 in 5 go missing something is very wrong. I would expect it to be more like 1 in 500. Most people are honest and RM is generally reliable.

You only see problems here and it is easy to get the impression that large numbers of buyers are out to con you and that RM lose every other packet!

What happens if you bought something years ago and don't have a receipt or 'paper trail' as proof?

I thought it was the other way around - the value would go on the sold price (this being the amount you would be able to provide proof of)?

Looking at RM compensation (not special delivery items)

"A payment of 6 x 1st Class letter stamps at the first weight step) shall be payable where only basic evidence is provided or the item is of no intrinsic value."

This also seems to be the same for items WITH intrinsic value.

So if you have no way of proving what you paid for an item - you would just get your postage costs reimbursed?

Also, they only seem to go on age as 'wear and tear' - what happens to things that might appreciate with age?

Sorry for all the questions but the more I read into it, the less I understand, or like!
  • and I thought this was a thread about the grumpy guy from Last of the Summer Wine....
NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself"
  • If you're selling it on ebay you claim for the £30 - you have to provide ebay and paypal sale information on the RM Claim form.
