Wallpaper strippers! to hire or to buy?

I need to strip a lot of very old woodchip from four rooms in my new house. I have looked into hiring/ buying a wallpaper stripper and it seems that it is virtually the same price to do either.

Now I am loathe to pay money to borrow something when I could just pay to own it instead, but I am thinking surely the hire strippers are of much better quality and would work a lot better.

What does everybody think?

if you do all the rooms in one weekend then hiring is prob ok.
WP strippers are so cheap now that i would certainly buy one. we have one in my family and everyone uses it!
its paid for itself many many times over.

I would vote for buying one ... they are very cheap now. Plus you may think you will get it all done in a weekend but with woodchip it can be a time consuming business. Good luck, I know how much fun it can be :).

I bought a steamer with has a wall paper attachment to it, so I can still use it to clean after I am finished with it being a stripper. Best of both worlds and I think it only cost about £15-20 in woolies last year.

buy one from wickes or somewhere similar. they only cost about 20 or so pounds. also wood chip can take ages to strip so you could be hiring a steam stripper for quite some time.

    good luck

    Woodchip in 4 rooms?

You'd be best off buying one, you'll be lucky to manage it in a couple of days - horrible stuff to get off especially if it's been painted over a few times. They're about £16-£17 in Wickes or Argos,

Personally I would hire a GOOD one rather than buy a CHEAP one.

PS let us know how you get on, we just painted over the woodchip in our bedrooms as we had SOOOOOooooooo much to do in the other rooms, but I thought when I got round to doing them again, I would have to get them replastered?

I've used a cheap one we bought at a carboot sale for a couple of quid on 3 rooms of woodchip. Personally I'm not sure how you really get 'better quality' on a)a heating element b) a plastic bucket c) a hose pipe. there isn't much too them bar pumping out steam, the rest is down to you(uness someone is prepared to wager their steam is better than mine...;))

If I could hire something, it would have been a wallpaper 'spiked roller' from HSS but they had it hired out already. Scoring the woodchip manually takes an age, also you have to be careful not to hover for too long or you blow the plaster, 2 rooms I have got away with touching up myself with filler, the 3rd hadn't been plastered in years so I have chosen to get that skimmed properly now the paper is off.

    Fair point.....:D

I just thought maybe a more expensive one might have a bigger plate, or a bigger tank, or whatever. But I see your point where this item is concerned.

My house is just post war & I should imagine the plaster is all original (apart from what we've had done), so it will probably all need it:eek:
