Oh no but they tell you they are at the initial meeting. I was told we get jobs in from Reading to Romford and that the manager goes out to get jobs in. They have what they call BDC managers who do this job allegedly. LOL Never saw a job advertised there or contacted about a job at all and when I asked I was told 'no'.

Local work is not what people are looking for its jobs in a 90 radius from home. I wish people would stop talking about local jobs. I have never worked local in my life.

I have always worked locally I have never had to travel more than a few miles away from home for work. The furthest I have had to travel is the few shifts I had through the WP and that was only a 10 min drive. Even when I search for work now I only ever look 10 miles from my home town.

so a waste of time I gather, so does this have to be attended weekly, monthly?

Please beware of making such a distinct judgement, there may be things that they can help with, however small that proves to be. Yet, the original role intended for WP providers was clearly to determine if the job seeker was actively seeking (first filter instead of JC advisers) and some will still do this. I guarantee that if you go in with a negative attitude, you will end up with a sanction. If you are genuinely looking for work, like as not they will let you get on with just that with little interference so they can concentrate on those that genuinely have needs or are playing the system. Nevertheless, if there is something you think they can help with...ask! One thing that possibly does not come across on these forums is that the object is not to avoid doing something but to find out if there is something that can genuinely help even in the smallest way. As a political tool, the WP is failing in its intention and its promise but do not think for one moment that it is totally worthless.

AP007, I am appalled at the way you were treated but that has not been my experience and I have been with four providers and three of these were able to offer help of varying kinds.
  • I got a full time job out of a 26 week placement I did with the job centre.

How old are you? Did the job centre get you the interview?

Appalled? How so? 4 people including a centre manager told me 'we will not be able to help you'. The only advise I got in the last month was if you are single and have no kids try to get a job in the middle east!!!

I am very enthusiastic about going to do anything to help me get into work, but with my previous experience of the places I am sent is not good, my last place I was sent for a four week training thing, then four weeks placement somewhere, which they didn't find me a placement, throughout part of this so called training we had to do a presentation and throughout most of this the tutor was asleep, I feel I could have spent my time better anywhere but there, was total waste of time, but I am very keen to try anything new to help me !!!!

I went there with open eyes too and was very keen only to be let down big time.

Come back later and tell us how they are going to help you.

The Middle East! its o.k for men but not so good for women. My friend who is a male is working out there in Dubai at present teaching squaddies who he says are like Dads army.
Women have a poor quality of life out there in many respects. Is your Jobcentre taking the hit and miss?

Hi, no it will not count as work programme i'm afraid. I found my own volunteering opportunity, i got the job centre to pay for the travel for 6 weeks.

It's a shame but charity or volunteering work is only experience there is little or no chance of paid or at least full time paid employment which is the aim of the WP. Not that the WP works anyway.

But finding your own volunteer opportunity looks good on your cv, and means you got motivation.
