This is one of the reaons I was given by my GP as to why he wouldnt refer me for a vasectomy and I had to go private.

Might be worth ringing Marie Stopes to see how much it would cost, but totally agree with rpc, the failure rate is much higher and with the potential for pain and continuing discomfort.

You need to do some research and work out the risks vs viability.
  • Sorry forgot to add, we are in the south west but it would be worth travelling for somewhere highly recommended.
  • Hi,

Will try and keep this brief, DH had his redo reversal carried out here http://www.vasectomyreversals.co.uk/team

He had vasectomy around Jan 2005, 1st reversal was carried out by the same surgeon in 2008 and failed. After a lot of searching he found Dr Dawson (who is not local to us!) After meeting with him for an initial consultation, we felt that in our circumstances it was worth giving it one last shot (badly worded - sorry) at "completing" our family. In September/October 2008 DH had the redo, by Christmas 2008 I was pregnant*.

    * Prior to vasectomy we had been very fertile... children born 2000, 02 & 04. DH was 33 & I was 28.

We had lots of factors that were in our favor, which is why I have given a little background.

Re pain and discomfort, DH had those issues but they started with the Vasectomy.

    All the best.

Doesn't really answer your question, but have you considered adoption?

Sorry but that's a really stupid and insensitive thing to say and this is why..

I know it's not the same situation as the OP but I'm tired of hearing the adoption line every time something to do with fertility is mentioned.

I'm sure you meant well Jimmy but it is a bit hurtful.

Sorry. As you say, I didn't mean to offend.
    Interesting article, though.

I think when you post on an open forum like this you are opening yourself up to suggestions that you hadn't thought of. This is a good thing. You are also opening your self up to suggestions that you don't like. That's not so good, but it's something that you put up with by asking for public opinions. [You are also opening yourself up to people wondering if you are a sockpuppet of another user who has an interest in a particular clinic, but that's another question altogether!]

While I understand that adoption isn't for everyone, I have had the snip and am happy that if we decide we want another child then it won't be biologically ours.

    I'm intrigued....

Sorry if I came across a little aggressively. It's just one of those comments that you always see on articles about fertility treatment of any kind and it is from people trying to help but it's about as useful as those people who tell you to relax and it'll happen. If you struggle to conceive, it's incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, and it's something that people who have never struggled with it don't or can't understand. You seem like a nice guy so I'll let you off :rotfl:

Anyway, this has no relation to the OP so I'll just hop off my wee soapbox now.

I do understand that an alternative to vasectomy reversal is a needle in the nads and ivf.
Have you looked at patient.co.uk? My gp sends me there when she doesnt know the answer!!

Comparing a couple who can't conceive to a couple wanting a vasectomy reversal is an insult.
  • In our area, reversals are done by the local SPIRE hospital.
Their website will tell you if there is one near to you.

I won't say much more as I work for the NHS!
