    Hi
Many thanks for all the useful posts.
Hopefully there will be some wonderful offers nearer the date.
My processer is an Intel Quad core Q8200, 4 meg of ram, Nvidia GeForce 9800 graphics and I have over 300 spare gig of memory.
It does seem a while since the last MS update.
I suppose the Windows Firewall is generic and will still work?

Could you explain why XP is wide open?
Although I didn't post the comment you're replying to, how about this...?

If it's past its security expiration date now, then can anyone explain why I'm not, with two active XP machines, falling prey to daily attacks?

Oh, yes, another journalist has spoken to all the hackers, and they've told him they're 'saving up' their attacks for 2014 ..... yeah, right.

A lot of it is down to luck (although you'd have to be very unlucky to be attacked daily).

It's a bit like leaving your house door unlocked every morning when you go out - it doesn't mean you'll necessarily get burgled but it makes the odds worse.

Equally you might have a house rigged up with alarms and the best security, and it doesn't mean you won't get burgled, but again the odds are shifted.

It's the same with computer security, you can't guarantee that you will or won't get attacked, but some computer setups are better or worse than others.

LittleJo - I take it that's 4gig of RAM not meg....
Do you know whether you're running 32 bit Windows? 32 bit OSs can't address the full 4gig of RAM you have, so you're being held back if you're on 32 bit.
Windows 7 or 8 (don't believe the negative stuff!) are a vast improvement over XP.

    Like the blaster worm.

My antivirus did nothing while blaster continually rebooted my XP machine. This was before I had smartphones or tablets, so I had to google how to stop the PC from shutting down in the 60 or so seconds I had before the PC rebooted. Was a nightmare.

And that was a worm that spread with people even having to open attachments. Nothing you can really do if such a vulnerability exists. It needs patching - no doubt about it.

Can't believe that was 10 years ago now!

    "shutdown -a"

aah the memories of september 2003.
