XP the end?

Hi
I have had XP for many years but it now looks as though I am going to have to upgrade.
What is the general feeling of the best way to upgrade and what to?

Why change it because Micro$oft are dropping support for it?
The software will keep on running, you won't get any more MS updates, but it won't stop working because of that, and XP is pretty stable now. :)

Interesting article, but I would think the average sensible home user with an up-to-date AV package (free one but not MSE as I assume updates for that will also stop), would be at a very low risk.

Why do you think you have to upgrade (or downgrade, depending on your point of view)?

A lot of malware served by exploits has a very low initial detection rate by AV software.

Buy a modern PC/laptop with Windows 7, then transfer your apps and data

Windows 7 is better than Windows 8. I don't think I'll ever get Windows 8 after attempting to use it on my mum's laptop!! And I'm computer literate. If Windows follows it's pattern of good bad good bad each release, Windows 9 will be better lol.

You don't have to give up XP until you have problems, just make sure you have a back up of everything. Which is pretty standard anyway.

    Like the blaster worm.

My antivirus did nothing while blaster continually rebooted my XP machine. This was before I had smartphones or tablets, so I had to google how to stop the PC from shutting down in the 60 or so seconds I had before the PC rebooted. Was a nightmare.

And that was a worm that spread with people even having to open attachments. Nothing you can really do if such a vulnerability exists. It needs patching - no doubt about it.

Can't believe that was 10 years ago now!
    What will your verse be?

    R.I.P Robin Williams.
  • I wouldn't like to do my internet banking on an XP machine after next year. I'm not trying to say it's at immediate risk, but I would rather avoid risks especially when it comes to my finances.

Windows 7 isn't really that much different from Windows XP. The chances are, Windows 7 will run as well as Windows XP does now, without upgrading too much. If you do upgrade, I would choose memory first.
