Warning sun £9.50 hols be wary

Hi , im in need of some advice please . I booked a holiday online with a newspaper deal and when i searched it found a holiday for 3 nights half board for £9.50 pp i booked for 4 of us and paid the £39.90 , I recieved a confirmation email with all the details on including "holiday cost - £39-90" I have now recieved a bill from the resort for £224.65 , I have contacted the paper i bought the holiday off and they said i cant get my money back and that it states in terms and conditions . this is extremely misleading and i have spoken to consumer direct who have said they are in breach of law of contract but the paper will not budge and give money back they wont give me the head managers name or contact details and i have tried ringing different numbers and have also emailed the customer services im getting no where . do you have any advise please

You say the newspaper are relying on their t&c's but don't specify what the terms say, could you paste them here please?

Have you put your complaint in writing to the paper? Informally or formally (the latter being letter before action).

  • You need to contact the holiday company that sent you the email.

I've been on a few of these holidays and there are always extra charges above the £9.50 - for example, they charge for linen, entertainment passes and service charges. In my experience, the only extra charges you have to pay are the service charges. £224.65 seems way too high.

The bill you received should tell you exactly what you are paying for, but if it doesn't,phone the holiday company and ask them.

It's usually £9.50 (or whatever) pp but that just gets you the accommodation. You then have to pay for entertainment passes, linen, gas, ... anything else they can think of, and often based on more people than are actually going. They must have given you a breakdown of the extra £65pp?

You could see if the T&Cs say these are optional and decline the use of the 'entertainment' and take your own linen.

I don't see why Consumer Direct say it's a 'breach of law'. The T&Cs would have specified what was and wasn't included (legal) and would've been non-refundable/transferable (legal).

They are often far cheaper just to ring up and book, yiu get a far better deal than the "£9.50" by the time they have finished charging to flush the bog and breath, they come in more than just booking the holiday from the camp.
    Be happy...;)

    more like:
reader didn't read anything, and figured they would get 4 peeps on a weekend break half board for £9.50 each because they read big letters only.
Sun/Mail breaks always show the figures as £9.50 each
+ service pp + entertainment pass (if applic) + linen (if applic) + upgrade cost if chosen + half/full board (if applic).

I'd say, a totally useless post and should be deleted already!

I had a quick look at their terms and it states all holidays are self catering and there is a surcharge for half board. That could account for the 55 quid extra per person.

  • I have booked several of these through Breakfree from local newspaper codes rather than the Sun, but it is exactly the same deal. I just choose which extras I need to pay for and cancel the others with the holiday company. We have had some great breaks. With the surcharges, we have never paid more than £25pp for the break including linen / entertainments etc.
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???
  • This is why you should always read the terms and conditions so you know what it is you are agreeing to. You can't blame anyone else if you choose to ignore them.

I think the OP was being extremely optimistic in their expectation of a 3 night holiday for £9.50pp half board.
