Changing broadband advice please - complicated story!

Options
Hi everyone,

I have a tricky problem and i'd value some advice :-)

I'll start at the beginning....

When my boyfriend moved in 3 years ago, i had one phoneline and was with sky for broadband and phone.
He was still half way through a contract with bt for his own phone and broadband, and was facing penalty exit charges. So he decides to get bt to fit another phone line and continue the service. Not really sure why now! My sky contract came to an end, so we switched everything to the new phone line. We have fibre optic on this line now. Several changes in provider have happened, and now we are back to BT for phone and fibre optic broadband.

So, now my EX boyfriend has moved out. Things didn't work. At the moment he is still paying for the BT contract, and it has a fair few months left on the contract (not sure how many) But, i need to sort out my own contract with someone, in case he stops paying it and leaves us with no internet/phone. I need the internet when i work from home.

So, what do i do? Do i have to ask him to cancel his contract before another one can start? I don't really want to use the other line because i will have to change my phone number ..again..

Any advice would be welcomed, and ask any questions if I haven't made sense! :-)

Your boyfriend would be liable to pay for an early cancellation fee. This would need to be settled before any other provider could take over. This is in exception to Virgin which could set up a new line for you or you could just have broadband only from them. Going down this route though, you'd still lose your number until the BT issue was rectified.

It's a tough situation I'm afraid but it's really up to your ex boyfriend in whether he'll still pay the service or pay the termination fee. If he just stopped paying it, it would be disconnected and it would be him that would face the problems afterwards so that wouldn't be in his best interests.

You can't have two broadband contracts/services on the same line.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
