US Government faces partial shutdown

It depended. A lot of 'essential' stuff will continue for the time being. This first phase is about conserving cash. Many will just keep on working, people working at some monitoring functions or at places like NASA will be forced to go on leave without pay.
The next bit is where it gets interesting. The Fed has a coupon (interest) payment to make in a few weeks (16th Oct? Not sure). If they fail to make it, and they will if the debt ceiling isn't raised, then the US will default for the first time since the 1930s.0 -
I'm in the US at the moment. No one seems to care much at present. Its on a lot of news shows but not with any sense of crisis, more sort of 'arent politicians douchebags'.0

the dancing and other reality shows
Eastenders
The cookery shows which appear to be on 25 hours per day
and reduce the news output to lunchtime, 6pm and 10pm - none of this rolling news or 'on the hour, every hour' rubbish. We have the Internet now and it is not needed.
Then maybe the license fee may be worth paying again.0 -
I won't hear a word said about the BBC. They've just done a piece on the shutdown for the simple people to explain what's happening. Apparently the webcams watching pandas at a zoo have been turned off.
Obama's got to sort this out!0 -

Yes, I admit this is really 'highbrow' news reporting. At least the pandas are being fed.
Obama - the mass panda killer - would not sit well with the public.0 -

I used to like it because there were no adverts. But now they spend more time advertising 'what's coming up' or 'what's on BBC2 next' or 'A new series of.... starting next month....'
The only thing I'd ask is that Have I got News for You gets bought by ITV or Channel 4.
And I can promise something else. If that ghastly Fiona "look at me. I went to Oxford" Bruce were to move to other channels, I'd throw all my televisions into landfill. She should have been sacked years ago when BBC quite rightly got rid of all the old female presenters.
Oh... forgot... I'd save Hacker T Dog. He should move from children's to adult entertainment and go to Dave/Gold or somewhere. He's priceless.
I agree, comme toujours, with most of this. Apart from the sentence in bold.
You may be aware that usually I am a loyal and devoted fan of your posts, but this, sir, is beyond the pale.
I wonder if you have an ambition to become a UKIP member, and are practising on this forum?
I hereby announce a 24-hour moratorium on thanking you.
(Edit) If I can <<giggles>>0 -

Well I'm sorry, but for reasons I can't fully explain, I find Fiona Bruce one of the most irritating people on the planet. Her supercilious smile is something I vomit over, as I did when on an Antiques Roadshow from Oxford, she reminded us three times that she was educated there....
She gives elderly women on BBC a bad name. [Although Angela Rippon's cardboard smile doesn't help either].
Don't get me wrong. I may have had sexist tendencies many years ago but not any more. Mrs LM saw to that. I believe in equal opportunities for all. Yes. I wear the trousers in this house, but my wife tells me which pair to put on.
Not being short of a few bob, I can assure you that I could afford to be a UKIP member if I so desired. So far I have resisted the temptation. I find the Farage boy speaks with some common sense and eloquently keeps us in touch with the excesses of our European friends. His straight talking is refreshing amongst the usual thick fog of politician-speak. But I would lay awake at nights if I thought he and his band of circus clowns were actually running the country.
I shall consider my next few posts a 'thankless' task, thanks to you, and your complaint will be filed in a suitable place.0 -
Could we have something similar here.
Keep it up for a month or two and we could reduce this years deficit by a fortune.
See how much of these public sector workers who keep banging on about "It's all about how it will affect the public and not about our pensions, salaries etc" will put their money where their mouths are and work for nothing for a few weeks.0 -

LOL - and I hate the Antiques Roadshow and all other similar shows "Flog it". The BBC does "flog" these types of shows: as you said, the cookery shows and so on. I only like Nigel Slater.
Mrs LM sounds like my kind of person. I salute her.0 -
