Where is the best place to get good value chicken?

Is it Lidl, Iceland or are the more usual supermarkets like Tesco/Sainsburys/Morrisons just as good value for money?

If you arent bothered about organic etc - and after watching that programme about organic chicken from asda being just as bad as bog standard chicken im begining to wonder about buying the organic ones :eek: -tesco quite often have the 2 for £5... but then again if you are allready in LIDL id be tempted to get them from there....well the less shops you have to go in , the less temptation there is..in theory

I saw the organic chicken program as well and was very shocked by it :eek:

I'm not bothered about organic - never really worried about it before and can't afford to start now... :rolleyes:

I don't mind going into more than 1 shop if it means it's significantly cheaper - I'm a stay-at-home so have the chance to visit more than 1 shop if needs be...

But for a start just 1 chicken will do because normally we just eat chicken breast fillets so I'm not used to handling them - I don't want to buy 2 and not be able to do anything with the 2nd one coz I'm too squeamish to do anything with it...:o I know I know... but I'm sure there's weirder phobias than mine :rolleyes:

I bought a Morrisons Super Roaster chicken for £3.99 and from that I was able to get three roast dinners for DS, DD and myself, plus two lunches (sandwiches) for me and 1 litre and a half of chicken stock. I think that was fantastic value for money.

I know this is slightly off topic. But i have been wondering this.
Ive never bought a chicken since i moved out and started cooking.

If there is only me, how many Meals could I make out of 1 Chicken.

Aldi, if you have one in your area, have fresh chickens at a reasonable price (can't find a receipt at the mo, but think it's something like £2.89 for large chicken, but don't quote me on that!) think they are British, too.
I prefer to buy fresh chickens, even if I am going to freeze them, cos they don't have the extra water you get with cheaper frozen chickens.

My local ASDA has one of those big rotisserie things and, the last time I checked, was doing cooked chickens for exactly the same price as the raw ones.

somerfield often have good deals on hot rotisserie cooked chickens. as low as £1.89 for a medium cooked chicken when on offer.

often only have flavoured birds on offer tho.

If you are going to buy chicken breast have you thought about buying turkey steaks, these are much cheaper than chicken

I always but turkey breast instead og chicken breast.

Do you have a market near you, these are good value for whole chickens
