To me a cocktail dress is very dressy, something you can't waer for most social occassions.

IMO it should be below the knee

Not like this cocktail dress from the Versace Spring 2013 collection then?

That certainly passes the test of not being able to wear it for most social occasions though :)

You really are on top form today!

I'm probably high on lemsip. (I'm not meant to have paracetamol to often).

I'm pretty sure we've only been to two white tie things in the last seven years. That means hiring for DH. The men ALL looked better than the women who were that same mixture of turnouts at the one I remember best.....

Difficult, because, I just don't like that dress, and it seems strangled casual with an air of cheer leader about it.

I actually don't have a problem with the length on the right woman. But probably if you go that short best to not go dressed also as a turtle neck under a tinsely pompon. But that's a matter of personal taste and, particularly in cocktail with lounge suits, I think that's 'ok' if a bit attention grabbing. ( the unwritten rule is never to try and outshine your hostess while making the best of yourself)

Another unwritten rule - never show legs and cleavage. If you're going micro-mini like the pic, cover the top. If low cut, cover the legs. And if you're making up the eyes, leave the lips quite nude. Never red lippy if tonnes of eye makeup.

Probably not needed, but worth mentioning for others on the thread, or if anyone's considering some low-cut, leg-flashing number!

My definition of cocktail dress is below the knee, can be strappless but if so it should be warn with some kind of shrug /shawl type thing (but that might just be me, I have arms like tree trunks).

After reading this thread and having a mooch about the interweb I am most disappointed at the lack of what "I" would call a cocktail dress, especially seeing as Christmas is coming up

Everything seems to be ballgown length or barely covering butts.

What happened to style and glamour??

I think I may have been watching too much Mad Men but I was thinking something along the lines of these

Well.....occasion wear is not immune to fashion and influence of time. While some eras have certainly done some types of outfit better than other years have, we are lucky to live in a time period where wearing a vintage or vintage style dress would be seen as 'darling' rather than frightfully outmodish.

Same goes for the guys as well. (Well not a dress exactly) - I have a 1940s double breasted dinner suit and a late 1950s shawl collar one button single breasted one and have had nothing but compliments for them whenever I have worn them.

DH has vintage dinner suits too. Only IMO, his look a little shabby. :o. They look very much owned rather then rented IYSWIM. :(. I wouldn't mind him turning up in a new one tbh.:D

I am lucky - one of mine was my grandfather's and he only used it for the lodge and had a new one made a year after he got it as it was too modern/young (in the 50s) for him, the other one is more or less as new too and was possibly worn less because it's midnight blue not black.
