Stained bathroom seal

Options
Hi

Our shower seal is all black and yucky in the corners and looks horrible. Does anyone know how I can disguise it until I get round to replacing it. Is there anything I can paint on as a short term measure.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried dousing it in domestos for half an hour then rinsing it? Bleach seems to be the only thing that gets rid of the black mould on our shower seal

Bleach will get it off, or at least fade it, but it will rot the sealant and cause leaks. The only answer seems to be to remove & replace unfortunately. Ours needs doing too :(

I had this problem and I used bleach and bicabinate of soada. Mixed to a thick paste using an old toothbrush and left it over night. The following morning used the toothbrush to clean it off and it worked a treat.:j

Ooh I didn't know bleach did that, better limit my use of it. Mind you saying that, I re-do our sealant every 2 years anyway so by the time it starts to perish it will be getting removed :D I hate doing it but at least it keeps the bathroom looking good

Wow Floyd I am very impressed you redo the sealant! Where do you get it from and how do you get the old stuff off?

I always buy the Unibond High Performance shower and bathroom sealant and buy it from B and Q as it doesn't warp or crack and can withstand pretty harsh treatment.

To get the old stuff off, I score down the edges where it meets the tiles with a stanley knife and do the same on the edge where it meets the shower tray as its stone not plastic. I would be a bit scared doing this on a plastic shower tray or bath in case I slipped and scored a big scratch into it!

You can pull out alot of the old stuff in one strip by scoring it, any remaining stuff I get off with Unibond Silicone Sealant remover. It takes a long time to do and is a bit messy but you get a much cleaner job when the new stuff goes on. Before putting the new stuff on, I always wipe down all surfaces with meths to make sure any grease and soap is completely gone.
