A bleach solution would prob work best at cleaning it.

I also use 5 parts water, 1 part vinegar and a few drops of essential oils to clean my bathroom now, and havnt had any problems with mold (i do keep the window open during the day to keep the moisture away)

  • I'm afraid im naughty and don't OS on certain products, one of them being Dettox Mould & Milldew remover, its in a green bottle, and its fabulous for things like that.

    HTH (even though not OS)

Edited to add: I believe coating the area in a clear varnish also helps as the mould cannot cling onto it!

thanks to all who replied to my post :T ...after reading all of them i think i'm gonna have to cut it out and put in a better silicone as mould is into the silicone and dont think it will scrub off with bleach or vinegar etc..never nothing simple eh,lol...

  • I think you're right. Put in the best silicone you can afford to start with. We've just given our bathroom a face lift about 6 months ago and this was one area I didn't skimp on.

Also after each use of bath (especially if you've a shower over your bath) wipe the water away around the seal and all over the tiles. Then open the window to get rid of the moisture and to make the air circulate. Takes seconds to wipe around and seems to be working in my bathroom at the moment. Don't leave the shower curtain blocking the air flow at the corner of the bath, perhaps pull it to the middle, preventing dead spots in the air flow.

I've just hung up a white face cloth, hidden behind the shower curtain for wiping stuff down and it seems to be working so far. I also took up advice on another old style thread which was to polish your tiles (not your grout) with car polish. It was hard work but definitely worth it as all the water seems to stay on the tiles in beads and is easily wiped off.

I've used nothing else on my silicone in the last six months and no mould so far. Long may it stay that way!

    Good luck

I have the same problem - I cannot get the black off but it seems to have rotted the sealant, and the mould is in the little holes

Will these products work as well on this problem?

I have only just joined this site - I think its marvellous

  • I bought a mildew remover made by HG from Lakeland for £4-95 last week. You spray it on the sealent around the bath and leave for 30 minutes - reapply and leave for another 30 minutes then wash off - hey presto the mould was gone (nothing else I have ever tried has worked). Also worked brilliantly on the sealant around the UPVC windows - the downside is it smells like a very strong swimming pool for a day! Upside it my bathroom looks like new again.
  • I have the same problem, and have finally found a way to get rid of it. Try sugar soap and a scourer. Makes my bathroom sparkle !
